On February 20, 2020, we called Sharon at Suncoast RV Rental and told her we were ready to make arrangements for our next RV trip telling her we wanted to go all the way to Glacier National Park and to some of the places we missed on our previous trip. We said we were planning on 30 nights, September 1, 2020 to October 1, 2020 but as you will see we extended it to 37 nights.
Sharon said they had just gotten in the 2021 Thor Chateau 23U and it was available for those dates. The very next day we received the email quote. We called her, thanked her and reserved it.
We were estimating this trip would be approximately 9,600 miles. We called Sharon the first of March and asked if we could stop by for a visit. She said the 2021 Thor Chateau 23U would be in on and gave us a date and time to come see it.
We drove to Suncoast with Lexi on with a tray of Nancy’s cookies and a proof of our book from our previous trip. We had not mentioned the book to Sharon before about this documenting our trip. We told her we had used her name and Suncoast and their logo in a number of places and thought we should ask for their approval before publishing. Sharon gave us the ok to publish and we promised to give her a signed copy once it was released.
We told her we wanted to take Lexi with us this time. We asked her to add the pet fee and deposit. We then said we would like to add a day up front so Nancy could spend her birthday with her son’s family in Clover, South Carolina. So, instead of the 1st we would like to pick up on the 31st of August. She checked her calendar, said it was available, and we could pick it up that Monday as early as we wanted. She added that if we wanted we could pick it up some time that Sunday since it would be ready to go. That done, Sharon took us outside to check out the 2021 Chateau that was parked in front of the entrance.
As we entered we noticed it still had that new smell. Lexi sat in the chair next to the door while we checked out everything. The only real difference with this model vs. the one we had last year was the addition of the propane oven. After seeing it we were even more anxious to begin this next road trip.
Back home we began revising and organizing our trip book and travel. I wanted to make sure I had allotted enough time for stops and sight-seeing.
Toward the end of February we heard the first reports of the deadly Corona Virus outbreak in China, but that was half a world away. We were sure it wasn’t going to affect us or so we thought.
By March, Corona Virus (COVID-19) had spread to practically every country in the world. (Over 100 countries and territories reporting over 287,000 cases and almost 12,000 deaths.) It was spreading quickly. COVID-19 was now here, and that could be a problem. We began to wonder if we were going to be able to make this trip.
The borders to Canada and Mexico were now closed as well as all state and national parks. But this was March. Our trip wasn’t scheduled to begin until the end of August, five months away. We thought surely this would be over by then.
We weren’t ready to change our plans or the dates for our latest adventure: Discovering America for 37 Days. We were still optimistic this would all be over before our August 31st date. This could be our last great adventure of this kind (Of course we said that last year, and here we go again.) and unless Suncoast canceled our reservation we were going to do it regardless.
On June 12, being optimistic, we called Sharon and asked if we could add three additional nights (a new total of 33). I told her Nancy found a place in Kentucky and another in Oregon that she wanted to add to our itinerary. Sharon checked her calendar and told us no problem. (I think Sharon knows us all too well.) That afternoon we received an email with a copy of the revised contract.
As of June 25th, Canada was reporting their border would remain closed indefinitely to tourism. If the border didn’t open in September we would have to skip Waterton and Sparwood in Alberta and British Columbia. I had really wanted to see Canada.
On June 25th, there was some good news. The National Parks were now open but we weren’t sure for how long. We were trying really hard to be optimistic.
We have included at the end of this book suggested menus for meals and packing lists. Consider what you’ll want and need ahead of time, and avoid frequent stops. (See suggested packing lists from Suncoast and our various lists at the end of this book)
We knew from experience we wouldn’t need everything on these lists, but most of it yes. There is plenty of room in the trunk and the inside cabinets to store everything you need and might need.
