They met in Hobart Town and married, and Edward subsequently became a policeman, detective and then legal clerk. In his detective work, he came up against powerful political forces of the day. At some time in his forties he seemed to disappear. The mystery is taken up by William and Rachel of the Archer and Martin Family History Detective Agency (a product of pure fiction; so too is the man calling himself Edward Lewis who turns up at the agency and demands that they stop looking for him).
William and Rachel search for what happened to Edward, applying all the methods of detectives and historians to hunt down the facts – filling in the gaps and sketching out the possibilities, all the while pursued by the mysterious man claiming to be Edward. In the end they believe they have found him, and it is a noble, redemptive tale.
I like historical fiction. In this case drawn from the real history of your family. But I noted that you labeled the genre mystery/suspense. Probably because, with few actual facts from that time, you turned their story into a mystery story.
I have written the story of my uncle who disappeared in his thirties and then reappeared 45 years later, 10 years after his death, with the full story unfolding, thanks to a private investigator. His two daughters don't want me to publish it. I respect that.
