The Water Cycle is the tragedy of Noah Mauka Kisiang'ani. The novel explores the traditions and and rites of the Bukusu people of Western Kenya, namely: circumcision, marriage, naming, funeral and walking the arena. All these are depicted through the rich oral tradition like song, proverbs, oral narratives and riddles. Kisiang'ani becomes a victim of the two cultures that clash during the colonial period. value systems are changing but Kisiang'ani holds on traditional beliefs. He refuses to contribute acent towards his education. Kisiang'ani has to lease farms, plant, sell his produce to meet the cost of his education. Read the book and give your own comments

Life was so terrible. There they were, children who accustomed to obey under coercion,Children who were bound by custom to watch their father assault their mother for asking him to give account of the monies got from the sold pieces of land. here was a son who was to applaud with automaton obedience a father who never cared what went down his gullets. Kisiang'ani's endurance was running out fast.

In spite of the changes, the new generation is still hampered by hereditary factors that threaten to take them back to the desserts of their antecedents. The author suggests that the more things change, the more they remain the same, and so is the tragic end of Noah Kisiang'ani.
