Chapter 1 - Back on Track
Cyril Wilby had been Head of Woodwork and Metalwork at Fenton-on-
Sea Secondary Modern School for six years. He had tried hard to ignore
the rumours that had been circulating for some time, but it seemed certain
that secondary education in the area was soon going to be reorganised,
resulting in a huge comprehensive school. Fenton Grammar School was
likely to become the upper school and Cyril’s school would cater only for
pupils aged 11 to 14. He had been reluctant to talk to his wife, Martha,
about such a possible merger, as it might also have a bearing on his son’s
education, let alone the significant change in his own duties and
responsibilities that would occur. Cyril’s son, Leonard, was halfway
through his third year at Fenton Grammar and, though he was far from
being an academic star, he had made an enormous number of friends
through his sporting ability – he was captain of both the Under 14’s
football and rugby teams. With all of these considerations beginning to
nag him, Cyril eventually decided to broach the subject at teatime one
Friday in late February that year, 1965. He was straight to the point.
“We may have to move, Martha.”
At first his wife seemed not to have heard Cyril’s bold statement
and carried on munching on a sandwich.
“I said: we may have to move from Fenton, dear.”
The mention of the name of their sleepy seaside town caused
Martha Wilby to swallow hard and look directly at her husband.
“Move? Move where?”
“I don’t know, but away from Fenton-on-Sea.”
“Why? Have we got money problems? Can’t we afford the
mortgage?

“No, dear. I may have to get a new job.”
Silence descended on the Wilby’s dining room and Len Wilby was
first to break it.
“Why, Dad? Are they giving you the sack?”
“No, son, not exactly, but….”
Martha Wilby went pale.
“So why have we got to move, then, Dad?”
“Have you not heard anything at school, Len?”
“About what?”
“About the two schools merging into one big comprehensive.”
“Yeah, a bit. Hempsall said we probably wouldn’t be taking any
first years next September, but why should that affect you, Dad?”
Len’s mum seemed relieved and interjected,
“So will you take them, then, Cyril?”
“Yes, and eventually we’ll only have pupils aged eleven to
fourteen, while Len’s school will teach the older ones.”
Len frowned.
“But why do you have to move, Dad?”
“Because I won’t be teaching O-levels or CSEs anymore, just the
young ones – I would hate it and, besides, I would have to apply for my
own job in the reorganisation.”
Martha seemed to understand, but Len was not convinced.
“But you’d get it, Dad; you’re one of the best teachers they’ve got.
Everyone says so.”
“That’s not really the issue. I just don’t agree with comprehensive
education. Bright kids like you, or your friend, Eddie, would initially be
in the same classes as the weakest ones. It just won’t work. We’ve always
been the best place for the real strugglers.”
