Some facts about the origins of the Christmas tree.
The Christmas tree is thought to have first appeared in Germany in the seventeenth century.
Apples,wafers ,and sweets
were amoung the first decorations
used, hence the name, sugar tree.
It is thought that the Hesson soldiers fighting in the Revolutionary
war brought the evergreen tree decorating customs with them.
As the tradition developed in this
country the type of trees used varied
from region to region, and many substitutes were used.
President Theodore Roosevelt,
worried about the depletition of our national forests. Now many
evergreen, fir and pines are raised
on farms and the Christmas tree industry has become one of the
largest planters in the nation.
The use of artifical trees has
increased . Many varieties are made,
offering more selection.
To sum it all up, The Christmas tree is a significant part of our Christmas traditions. Its magisty is
seen the smiling faces of young and old. So it began, so it continues.

I loved the real Christmas trees we had as a child, decorated by my parents after we went to sleep Christmas Eve; and later as I grew older, I helped decorate it for the younger ones. We now have an artificial tree, but the scent of the real ones is unequalled, notwithstanding the *bottled* scents they have out now. (:D
as a child watching the slow death of our christmas tree, i decided i would be the "artificial" type...i've had the same tree now for 25 yrs...last christmas i watched them harvest the trees for the annual christmas tree distribution...it was horrific...it is a huge business where i live in Oregon.
