Is the war on terror about to escalate?

Sometime early last year on  Machiavelli blog I made one of famous predictions. (Not all my predictions come true , I just don't mention the ones that don't.) The point was also mentioned here and at Salon.com, Guardian News Blog, Gather.com and other venues.  I said that with public opinion in the U.S. turning against him, George Bush would delay the war with Iran until after the mid term elections which would go against the Republicans. He would then start banging the wardrums and launch the attack in late 2007 or early 2008, providing an excuse to declare a national emergency and suspend the Presidential elections. Well I exaggerated about the last bit to boost readership, it's more likely the attack on Iran will be a last desperate gamble to swing America behind the ongoing War on Terror and ensure a republican succession.

But most of it I stand by.

There follows the opening paragraph of an article written by Dan Plesch, an expert on Middle Eastern politics. It appeared in today's Guardian newspaper.

"The evidence is building up that President Bush plans to add war in Iran to his triumphs in Iraq and Afghanistan - and there is every sign, to judge by his warmongering speech in Plymouth last Friday that Tony Blair would be keen to join in if he were still in a position to commit British forces to the field."

Double brace yourselves folks because I now predict that Tony Blair will now delay his resignation until after the invasion of Iran in order to gamble on being asked to stay on rather than "destabilise the British government in a time of crisis." After all a change of leadership in such circumstances would be bad for morale. Wouldn't it?

Power is a very seductive mistress, especially to those with a messianic self image.

Another perspectve on events in Washington

Well that's not much fun so check out my AD blog for a smile.

The Bush administration has already gone too far. GW and his cronies must be impeached before they start another war that the U.S. cannot win. BTW: we've already invaded Iran, we just don't want anyone to know.

God help us if we choose to venture any further into the abyss. We can't even afford to sustain the current mess we created in Iraq.

Isn't America supposed to be the country "of the people, by the people and for the people"? The people have spoken but the president has turned a deaf ear toward their voices and skoffs at the public saying "I'll do it My Way" regardless of what you want and feel is best for the country.

The U.S. is headed for unprecedented destruction and disaster.

I think your right, but I wish you were wrong. Can't fight that war without a draft. Don't want to fight that war with a draft either. The best way to deal with that is for them to have a nuclear accident. You know, like who the heck knew they were working on a hydrogen bomb. And would ever guess they'd blow themself up with it.
