Many, many years ago when I was very young and decided to methodically study my craft as a writer I started studying Freud and Carl Jung. Both men asserted that dreams where stories the mind told itself while a person was asleep and that the stories made rational sense. This was pretty exciting stuff for a young writer who did not want to come right out in a story and state what the story was about but could get across the message of the story through subconscious signifiers.
This meant, depending on the understory of the story, that colors, weather, body language, a river, a road, an animal, a plant, just about anything could be used as a signifier to get across to the reader's subconscious mind more than his or her conscious mind could understand.
It's a good theory. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't; but when it does it's magic. It's Compressionism.
Weird as I am Kafka, Tolstoy and Camus became my literary and mental mentors, until there comes Orwell with his 1984 telling the world about what was, once, going on in the world of my childhood house.
