Souvenirs de Jérusalem

Lorsque nous vivions en Tunisie, mon cousin Robert et moi jouions ensemble à attraper les oiseaux. Sa mère était restée veuve, après que son mari était mort de ses blessures de la guerre 1914-1918. Quand son père souffrait encore de ses blessures, il me disait: "J'espère que mon fils et toi ne connaîtront jamais les guerres". Hélas pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale Robert combattait déjà les Allemands et moi je me trouvais sous les bombardements des avions Messerschmitt et Stuka. Puis pendant des années je ne l'avais plus vu.

En 1948/49 je le rencontrai à Jérusalem. Nous avions tous deux trouvé un travail dans la fabrication de blocs pour la construction, nous étions alors bien payés. J'avais fini par habiter avec sa mère et lui à Katamon. Le seul défaut de ce travail était qu'il fallait aller à pied tous les jours de Katamon jusqu'à l'autre côté de la ville ainsi  nous exposant aux soldats jordaniens. Alors nous devions passer par la gare qui était déserte. Auprès du mur de la gare il y avait tout le temps un gardien qui dirigeait le va-et-vient des habitants de Katamon. Les soldats de la légion arabe étaient perchés sur les murailles de l'ancienne ville, ils visaient et tiraient sur chaque passant.

Je me souviens du rôle de ce gardien israélien. Son devoir était d'observer les soldats de la légion arabe et quand il jugeait le moment approprié de passer il nous faisait signe avec son bras de courir vite vers l'autre côté où il y avait un autre mur qui nous protégeait. Sur dix passants il y avait un parmi nous qui était touché, parfois mort parfois blessé par les balles des soldats jordaniens, nous retournions pour le tirer mort ou vivant de la vue des ces soldats. Nous vivions alors sans crainte ni peur, alors que notre vie était tout le temps en danger. Nous faisions face à notre journée de travail avec espoir et courage. Le soir au retour du travail le gardien cédait son rôle à l'obscurité qui était devenue notre gardien protecteur. Je me demande qu'est-ce qu'il y a de changé depuis 58 ans?
