It is that time of year again, the boss does the reviews and there is a job opening that you desperately want. You have been waiting for months for the opportunity to get that promotion. You know that you can do the job, perhaps better than the next guy. But every time there is a promotion up for grabs, the other guy gets it. So how do you go about persuading your boss and the company to give you the promotion?
Most people attempt to convince their boss that they deserve the position because of seniority or how well their job performance has been for the gazillion years that they have been working there. They try to point out every good thing they have ever done, every client they have wowed, every night they worked late, every weekend they gave up for this company and then what happens? The boss agrees with you. You are doing wonderful. You are an asset to the company. Your job performance in every review is outstanding. Then he drops the ball. That is why we can't possibly move you. You are irreplaceable in your current position.
The truth of the matter is most people don't have a clue of how to get a promotion. If your desire is to climb the proverbial corporate ladder there are a few do's and don'ts you should follow.
Don't try to convince anyone how good you do your job. Do convince him of how good you would be in the new position. Do point out the attributes that the new position requires. Do prove to him that you have the necessary skills and experience to fill the position. Do distinguish yourself from other candidates by pointing out your unique attributes.
Do try to demonstrate in your current position the skills you have and how they have expanded since you started with the company. Try and make those around you look good by doing a good job at what you do. Don't point out the errors of others when trying to persuade management that you are the best person for the job. Do network - make your presence known from the coffee pot to the after hour social events. Do show everyone not only are you a talented employee but that you are easy to get along with and have passion for what you do. Do concentrate on developing more skills that will better prepare you for new positions.
The art of persuading management to promote you is up to your attitude and your approach. Write out the ideas that you have, the visions for the promotion position and how you would attain them. Include why you would be the best candidate for the position. Write out your skills and knowledge, including your experience. Then practice your approach before you actually make it. You will then seem flawless and self assured in your presentation. You will find a much more receptive management when you are not trying to convince yourself you deserve the position as your propose it to them.
