The other day I had the opportunity to spend some time with a new found friend. It didn’t take long for me to wish I had listened to my own gut feelings and resisted the temptation to try and give a little clarity to the political issues at hand. Somehow it wasn’t until the horse was already out the barn door that I found myself standing with an empty lasso in my hand. Now to find any form of conscientious rest, I like countless others will need to sort out and define what works best for me.

Between the comments on TV where candidates and news reporters are saying religion doesn’t matter and those of my new found friend who is adamant about the importance of electing republican verses electing a democratic, I had to ask myself several important questions. What should I do? “What would Jesus Do”? Does having faith keep me form having hope? How complicated does this voting process have to be?

When all the dust had settled for me, it appears to be simple. Weather it is the candidate who stands for Pro Choice or the one who adamantly hails No Fault Divorce, blood is red just like dead is dead.

The Republican Party is traditionally known for its conservative stature and the Democratic Party is traditionally known for being the poor man’s choice. A person of faith should not be known for a political party. Rather they should be known for their commitment to the principles which allows their faith to rest easy without feeling the shame of compromise or the guilt of sin.

If my new found friend feels she needs a party (the Democratic or Republican Party) to assist her in making a choice that enhances her faith I’ll not be the one to judge her freedom to choose one. She appears to be very strong on the fact that a person who does not respect the rights of the unborn will not be a good leader for our country. She states that there are so many abortions today and that same sex marriages are on the rise all because so called Christians don’t vote for conservative Republicans. While I agree that abortions are on the rise and that the marriage act should not be changed to include other present day “Partner Groups” I also believe that as a Christian I have the responsibility to promote these principles through the avenues which I personally feel address them most effectively.

When a baby is killed in the womb (or more precisely on its exit from the womb) through abortions the baby has still been put to death. The acceptance of a woman’s right to choose abortion certainly decreased the growth of our society by millions. A Pro Life Republican Candidate might be able to change that. By the same token a Democratic Candidate who is not Pro Life can do a lot to stop abortions of a different kind in other ways. For instance if he is an adamant proponent of abolishing the injustices surrounding the alarming percentage of Black Men who are incarcerated for life though a clearly unfair and unequal justice system he is also promoting life instead of death. As he fights to change laws like the “Three Strikes You’re Out”, to eliminates police cover ups of Police Brutality, and makes sure that those who need adequate legal representation when facing life in prison, he to is stopping the abortion of millions. Men in jail don’t produce babies. Women who want families with husbands or companions don’t have babies with men who are locked up for life. We in essence abort an entire race by a system which punishes the offender, non offender, and family member who is on the outside.

So for me it’s not the political party we need to be concerned about as much as what does our faith push us to stand up for. If I choose to vote republican it won’t be because their traditional candidates run under the banner of Pro Life. I don’t want to trust my faith to those who might change their minds down the road for political gain. Instead I’ll teach those I love and those who will listen of God’s plan to preserve life. If I choose to vote Democratic it won’t be because I trust them more than the Republicans (or independents for that matter).

My vote will be based on what my faith represents to me as the most important issues at the time. I wouldn’t want to be responsible for the continual killing of unborn babies. Neither would I want to be responsible for the continual abortion of any specific race. Destroying life through the destructive instruments surrounding an abortions table is just as despicable as those who intentionally destroy or stop the procreation of any race through imprisonment or unjustified murders. So the question should not be weather you are a Republican or Democratic. Instead it must address a person’s willingness to stand up for their faith to defeat wrong. Abortion is wrong, same sex unions are wrong just like blood is read and “Dead is Dead”.
