PROLOGUE - the Preamble to that which follows:

by Tom Hyland (author) at 5/1/2008 12:58:14 PM

ED - but isn't GREEN supposed to be GOOD?

Now here's a word I haven't heard for years and years - CHLOROPHYL - remember the GUM ads? and the natural process of PHOTOSYNTHESIS?

As a kid, I well remember the old-fashioned 'normal' grass at Riverside Park - it was about half YELLOW when the dandelions erupted - just like everyone else's lawns! It was NATURAL! I can just see someone putting a yellow buttercup, or whatever, under a young girl's chin, and saying: "yellow, yellow, you like a fellow!"

Milk-weeds were everywhere too! And pulling up some of those narrow, long-stems with grass blades, and making little working 'umbrellas.'

And those other 'weeds'? with little 'buds' on the ends, wrapping the stem over, and pulling it - POP - shooting them at each other, like little guns!

And on a really rare day, or early evening, to actually find a little baby garden, or greensnake, and playing with it, ever so gently letting it tickle you, running up and down your arms - and when done - to carefully allow it to 'escape' safely, hoping to re-discover another day.

Then, the radio SNAPS me back to reality, people on PBS talking about the new game release CAR-JACKING 4, or whatever, where kids can SLAM a CAR into a PROSTITUTE, and SQUASH HER TO DEATH!

When we were kids, we never heard the word prostitute, nor SLUT, nor HO - a hoe was a garden implement, stored in the garage, or shed, next to the rake and shovel!

Well, Dear Friend, maybe we are just getting OLD?

The older saying is: "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em!"

Today, I feel more like: "If you can't beat 'em - F**K 'em!" Peace ... Tom.

The above prompted PEE-WEE ED to do his DANDELION DAWN today - which then instigated (yet again, no less) the following response:

MOWING & ME DON’T MIX

ED - Re: DANELION DAWN -

OMG - am I HONORED, or what? As I read your tremendous poem just now, out loud to my Lady Friend, who spent the night, we both laughed!

When I got to the point about you mowing around the dandelions, I exclaimed: "Oh, Christ! sounds like my lawn!" She had to go look out the door to see what I meant. Have not yet mowed the 1st Spring growth! DANDELION HEAVEN!

In fact, last nite she brought me her old weed-whacker to check, cause I burned the motor up in mine last year! Last Saturday, I got a LETTER in the mail from the TRAILER TRASH PARK Management "SUPER BITCH" telling me I had to mow my lawn IMMEDIATELY!

Needless to say - I HATE MOWING! Avoid it like the plague, can't find a local to pay to do it, and it is on my priority list as a ROUND TUIT!

But, today is the day - she just left - will get dressed now, go to my shed, plug in her WHACKER and test. It has no SPOOL or retainer mechanism on it. If the motor works, will see if my Spool fits hers!

If not, then maybe I can swap motors? If not, to HOME DEPOT I WILL GO! Maybe get me a new WHACKER? My WHACKER is kind of old, you know - and sometimes just WON'T GO!

While there, I will check to see if there is an -
ALL NATURAL SAFE DANDELION FERTILIZER!

"DANDELION DAWN - WHAT'S THAT FLOWER YOU HAVE ON?
COULD IT BE A FADED ROSE FROM DAYS GONE BY?
OR DID I HEAR YOU SAY, YOU WAS MEETIN" HIM TODAY,
IN HIS MANSION WAY UP HIGH IN THE SKY?"

God Bless Hard-Headed POLLACKS -
and Hard-Headed Irishmen -
and ... hard-Headed, persistent, BEE attracting --- DANDELIONS !!!

Peace, my Friend, Peace! Tom.

Indeed, Tom! What are parents thinking when they buy these video games instead of taking their kids on a walk or a bike ride?

The last few years teaching Shakespeare were painful. Everytime a character said, "What ho, Romeo?" the class would riot.

Times have changed indeed. I prefer the simple life and the blue sky. . .never bought a video game in my life! Books, the great outdoors, and dogs for me! Eileen

And remember dandelion salad greens. We used to go hunting for them. Hard to find dandelions in the desert. What memories. Looking for wild strawberries, wild mushrooms, nuts in the fall and a host of other things. Kids today don't know what they've missed.

When I was a kid, in the very heart of Chicago, on the west side, not very far from the Loop, my dear old grandmother turned our backyard into a truly natural paradise. Her flowers were enormous; her vegetables absolutely scrumptious; and she attracted the most glorious birds to her backyard feeder. One of my very first pets was a delightful garden snake I named Tiny. I would feed him bugs from the garden, and I even took him to school with me. He lived in my shirt pocket for several years.

I loved that old big city backyard garden, and even if all these noxious pesticides and herbicides and dandelion killers were available back then, my Grandma would have scoffed and said, " Edju, God knew what He was doing, why would we ever want to mess that up?"

I truly believe that many of our problems today started when we began playing God, arrogantly believing that we could do a better job than He ever did.

And I think we were very sadly mistaken.

I still miss my wise old grandmother, and my little snake, Tiny. Those harmless little natural bug predators haven't even been seen around Chicagoland for probably the last 30 or 40 years.

What a noxious world, it has truly become.
