The Hunt for Atlantis by Andy McDermott, ISBN 978 0 7553 3911 2, Headline Publishing Group, review by ellen george

The Hunt For Atlantis has enough action to make Indiana Jones lose his Fedora trying to catch up!

Archaeologist Nina Wilde is following her parents' footsteps, trying to find the Lost Continent of Atlantis.  She has taken information from Plato's writings and other cultures' legends and has formed a concensus she knows where Atlantis' ruins are.

There is some argument in the funding committee's eyes, and Nina is contacted by a multibillonaire and his daughter. They will fund the hunt to find Atlantis. But there is a group, the Brotherhood, that does not want Atlantis to be found. The question is, who is the hero and who is the villian?

Conflicts that echo the endings of the real destruction of Atlantis are part of this book's action. Was the power and corruption at Atlantis' end part of its downfall?

The fact that the survivors of Atlantis went to many distant lands and assimilated themselves in the cultures, while adding in their own ways is eerily evident in the hints of today's cultures and legends.

Was Plato correct about Atlantis? Is there somewhere tangible proof? I think there is. Of course I knew about Atlantis before I could even read. It has held a fascination to me and continues to this day.

McDermott's book The Hunt For Atlantis is not a fast read at 538 pages, but it is a book that will have you wondering what if there really was a Lost Continent that had aircraft, that had tracking devices, that was more advanced that we in modern day cannot imagine there was such technology then? I think our world has forgotten more knowledge than they have retained...You will be thinking of the search for Atlantis in a different light after reading this book.
