Dating rituals of the 60's

A pregnancy was not what I wanted because I was going to Nursing School right after graduation. I had seen girls at school drop out because they were going to have a baby. That seemed to be so wrong. Heck, I had enough brothers and sisters, I didn’t need a baby to complicate my life.

I was determined he would not convince me to make love to him but my stance felt weak even to me. Oh what was I going to do? I couldn’t nor did I want to say no to the dance. Ronnie’s kisses dogged my entire day. Now with him standing here I wondered if he was going to be my first, my first lover.

Ronnie didn’t stay long and as I walked him to the car, with my brothers and sisters were gawking out the window. Those brats were making me nervous. Ronnie got into his car; the window was rolled down, and he whispered, “Come here.” I leaned into the car his hand went behind my head pulling me close and kissed me hard, “you haven’t forgotten have you?” I shook my head, gasping the words out, “no I haven’t!”
Saturday came at last. My second date with Ronnie soon to be a reality. My preparations were painstakingly detailed. I had gotten some blue eye shadow from my neighborhood friend Kathy, and when mom wasn’t looking I tried it on. She had also given me a contraption to curl my lashes a sort of tweezers thing with a curved crimper. I decided my lashes would stay straight that thing looked way to scary. I was nervous, excited, and a bit, well more then a bit anxious.
He got there at 7:30 a little earlier then I expected. I had been ready for an hour anyway so I said my goodbyes to mom and she gave me “the look” making sure I remembered how to behave in this mans company. I had endured an hour of lecture on how to behave, don’t dance too close, don’t drink, come straight home, don’t sit too close, don’t go sit in the car with him, don’t don’t don’t !!!!!!!! I left the house feeling like an escaped prisoner.
Ronnie kissed me as soon as the door closed a lingering, warm, wet kiss. My body caught on fire. The rest of the night promised to be even warmer. I got into the car and scooted over close to him, his arm went around my shoulders and he drove out of the yard. I’m sure mom saw me slide over and sit next to him; there would be a lecture tomorrow. The trip to Hill town was filled with small talk and snuggling, we talked about weather and stuff but our minds were not into the subject. We felt so at ease just sitting close and chatting.
The dance hadn’t started yet and we helped with the decorations, setting up the bar and clearing out the remains of the reception that had preceded the dance. Ronnie worked behind the bar for a while helping. I sat in a booth across the hall and watched him work. He talked and hustled behind the bar but every once in a while he looked over at me and smiled. I felt pretty darn special right then. Soon the band began to set up and the people from the neighborhood, relatives, friends and just folks coming to dance began to arrive.
Cars filled the parking lot and the usual security cop a large red-faced man in his 30’s ambled in, taking a look then went back outside circulating, hoping to find trouble and dissipate it before it got out of hand. There were always fights sooner or later. Everyone hoped that the people in the wedding party weren’t the ones involved, but the drinking seemed to be a trigger for tempers to flare up.
I watched Ronnie for a few more minutes then went to the ladies room a small three-stall bathroom right next to the bandstand. The band started to play while I was using the facility. I hurriedly checked my hair, snuck out my pink lipstick and reapplied it and put on some blue eye shadow. Mom couldn’t see me now. I walked to the bar Ronnie wasn’t there I looked towards the area that his family had staked out and was going to head in that direction when arms came around me from behind, “where did you go, I missed you?” I turned Ronnie was smiling down at me. “Just to the ladies room.”
“While the band is getting started let’s go sit in the car where it’s private.”
“Ok!” I said knowing mom would have had a fit. I wanted to kiss him so bad my body ached for it.
We walked out in the chilly fall air as he held me close I shivered. I wasn’t shivering from the cold but the sensation of being held close to a moving body was what made me shiver. He thought I was cold so he removed his jacket and draped it over my shoulders. The smell of his favorite cologne English Leather assaulted my senses. I felt so warm so protected. We got into the car and he immediately put his arms around me and kissed me. I kissed back with an enthusiasm that startled him for a second as he drew back, looked in my eyes then began to grin.
His hands were on my back but they soon went to the hem of my blouse and under it. Rubbing my bare back was like touching exposed wires; his touch heightened the sensation and I was brought higher, it was incredible. Soon that was not enough, as his hands came to my breast and touched so lightly at first then cupped it in his had as if feeling its weight. His kissing was relentless, making me sigh, his mouth went to my neck suckling and licking and exploring. (The next day I found 4 hickys) At this time a new awareness began to happen to me a feeling deep in my belly an ache that wanted satisfaction. It startled me and I drew back and took a deep breath. “Ronnie we better go in now, this is getting to serious!”
“Yeah you are right let’s go inside, just a few more kisses though’ and I want you to do something.”
“What Ronnie? What do you want me to do?” He took my hand and placed it on the bulge in the front of his pants, I tried to pull away. “No I need you to touch,” he pleaded. I touched so him gently, he groaned and pressed my hand down harder. “That’s right Marsha press and move, like this!” This touch made him sigh, and it triggered something very new inside of me. A need began to grow. Too soon, he gently removed my hand and we kissed a last time. Then reluctantly he opened the car door to return to the dance hall.

We entered the dance hall. The ceiling of the hall was decorated with crepe paper streamers that had two colors twisted together in the colors of the wedding party. These colored papers were looped into long swags that came together with balloons and large open-up paper wedding bells in coordinating colors. Tables had matching balloons with colored ribbons all in colors of the event. To one side was a table overflowing with wedding gifts. These were traditionally opened the next day at the parents home. A prettily decorated box with a slot cut out for envelopes with cards and money was sitting in the same area as the gifts. The family usually assigned someone to watch that box carefully as sometimes-considerable money was involved. I saw a cousin of Rodney’s a girl of 13 doing this task quite proudly.
