As I embarked on my own self-publishing journey, I had no misconception at all that keeping my day job would be necessary. At no time did I ever think, “I will quit my day job tomorrow and start writing full-time.” Not that I wouldn’t love to do that, but the reality is - that is not reality. I wondered if I was the only one among authors who understood the importance of keeping her day job or did everyone else understand that too.

In attending an authors association meeting one night, the keynote speaker opened with these words: “Of all the things I will be sharing with you tonight, the most important is this…Keep your day job!” Apparently, there are people out there who have quitting their day job as the first item on their “To Do” list. And this keynote speaker must have run across that mindset often enough that dispelling this misconception right off the top was the most important thing he had to said all night. So, even if that keynote speaker and I were the only two who understood that keeping the day job was important, at least I was not alone in my thinking.
 
Think of it this way - Keeping your day job could be the source of your inspiration. Interacting with people or working through the challenges of the day may give you the makings of the next bestselling novel or book on business management. You may love the industry you work in everyday or just simply require the financial stability.

Look at Rick Warren, Donald Trump and Robert Kiyosaki. All are bestselling authors with day jobs – You’re among great company! So, keep your day job and finish writing that bestseller!
