Yesterday I watched the video of Susan Boyle singing on 'Britain's got Talent' and the performance moved me to tears. Millions across the globe have watched the video on YouTube and have responded in an overwhelmingly positive way. It seems that her singing also brought Demi Moore to tears as was reported on the news. Apparently this was gleaned from Twitter messages sent to her husband Ashton Kuchner. This is no surprise to me although I fail to understand why Demi's reaction garnered such media interest. What she has done at least is generate even more interest in the world's most unlikely singing sensation.
My own impressions:
When I watched the initial interview with Susan Boyle, just before she walked on stage, I literally cringed inside, thinking, 'She is going to be utterly humiliated'. She looked so plain (to put it mildly), her dress was frumpy and she was clearly not what anyone would imagine 'Star material' to be. I was clearly not alone in my thinking. The reaction from the audience when she walked out on stage was palpable with many sniggers and even looks of downright disbelief. Simon Cowell rolled his eyes and you could see he was thinking something along the lines of, 'Oh Lord what do we have here?' She faced cynicism and downright rejection from both the judges and the crowd but she smiled bravely, answered a few questions in her humble, earthy way and then, after giving the signal for the music to start playing, picked up that mike and blew everyone away with her rendition of 'I dreamed a dream' from 'Les Miserables'. I was so choked up I had to keep swallowing and tears rolled freely down my face. It's hard to describe what an impact this woman made in this her moment of glory on stage but the audience went from one extreme to the other and ended up on their feet giving her a standing ovation. The applause and cheers were deafening. One of the judges, Piers Morgan, said, "Without a doubt, that is the biggest surprise I've had in three years of the show," Simon Cowell claimed that when he first saw her he knew that he'd hear something 'extraordinary'. I'm not sure if that was meant to be a compliment or not.
Everybody loves a real-life Cinderella story and this one has touched the hearts of all types of people around the world who have taken her into their hearts. A simple woman from West Lothian in Scotland, an unemployed volunteer charity worker and church goer, got up on a stage and was laughed at when she said she'd like to sing like Elaine Page. In my opinion (and it seems I'm not alone in this) she sang better than Elaine Page. She is the new singing sensation and her story has impacted upon people in a meaningful way and given so many ordinary folks hope.
In this modern day and age, our singing stars are so often larger than life, models of physical perfection and, in my opinion, also so often unrealistic role-models for fans. So many of them have had extensive plastic surgery are attended to by a veritable troupe of make-up artists, wardrobe people etc. so that they look the iconic part. I am sure that Susan Boyle, a spinster who candidly confessed that she's never been kissed, will be transformed over the coming months. She will no doubt be groomed to look like the star that she is but i hope she never changes the intrinsic quality that makes her the person that reached into the hearts of millions across the world and made all of them (and me) love her. May she retain that down-to-earth, natural quality that makes her stand out. I also pray that she never turns into a prima donna and remains a positive role model to the world. Somehow, I think that she will and this gives me incredible hope. The world needs Susan Boyle and the message she puts out.
I don't know if she will win 'Britain's got Talent' although I'm rooting for her but she's definitely up there and in the running and whatever the outcome, she is now a star in the true sense of that word. There is already a fan site up and YouTube keeps racking up hits (well over 5 million in just 3 days).

Good Article.
Had the same feeling.
What most people don't realise, there's more to it - not simply beautiful voice and a touching moment.
Her voice has The Healing power. Just listening to it may help to cure many people.
And i hope to hear some religious songs or prayers she might sing.
Because her mission is special - not just to be another pop star.
Nice article. I was deeply moved by her performance as well. It is obvious that Susan Boyle is very talented. I was moved even more by the way she responded to the hostility that was before her. It was so obvious that the audience was against her and the judges were not impressed. Nevertheless, she managed to give an amazing performance. To me, it took more than courage to rise against this kind of enmity. But, at the end, she was the winner. Hopefully, someday, we would be able to appreciate all people regardless of their looks.

I'm an Minister, and I've always pulled for the underdog. When I saw Ms. Boyle standing before the Simon Cowell and others, I'd hoped that she would "do something different", and not get embarrassed. And she did! I believe she brought tears to the eyes of both women and men! I certainely had to hold back my tears because I could see the humbleness and genuiness in her, and in her singing. All she wanted to do was to sing to an audience once...that's why she was just walkng off the stage afterwards. I pray that she will be blessed by God.
an amazing singer -- but most impressive of all -- a genuinely wonderful person -- something neither beauty nor make-up can create -- thanks for sharing Chanti
It's a shame that we always judge the exterior package before we get to know what lies beneath. What a gem this woman is...a lovely commentary Chants. I played the performance over and over...I couldn't get enough. BTW, Simon is trying to sign her to his Sony BMG label, so she's on her way to the big time. :-) Love, Michelle
Hi Chanti - I saw it and was just as blown awayyyyy, The LORD has "GREAT" plans for her and her spirit shines, the way WE NEED more to shine! What a voice!
Transformations we made in many, as her spirit belted out beauty!
Thank you for sharing your energy and hers Chanti! "REAL BEAUTY seems to always be "waiting patiently" from the INSIDE! I'm so excited for her and want her C.D. - If She moves on (I don't think there is any doubt) It will be movement as when PRESIDENT OBAMA was Elected!

I responded like everyone else-What's this? Who's next? We all learned a lesson on not judging too quickly. I hope the rest of her life becomes as beautiful as her voice.
Jim, all I can say is thank you for sharing this with me. I must admit that it also made me think in the way it did you. It is a shame that we so often judge a book by its cover and this was clearly the case here with Susan Boyle, who through her singing transformed from a plain, ordinary woman into a beautiful one. She will definitely make people think more about what constitutes a star. I have always felt that the way people worship pop idols and they way that they are portrayed as examples of physical perfection, is very sad but after watching this I have hope. I think the world is ready for Susan and others like her. What a heart-warming story.
Thanks to all who have responded so warmly to this article. I just had to post my thoughts up after being so blown away by the video. I cannot get enough of this woman's voice and hope that a CD is soon released. I'll be the first in line to buy it. (",)
God bless this dear lady; she has a fan in me! What in inspiration she is, especially those who live with disabilities or those who "aren't pretty" in society's eyes! I hope she goes. All. The. Way!! BRAVA, Chanti, and BRAVA, Susan Boyle!!
(((HUGS))) and much love, your friend in America, Karen Lynn in Texas. :D
Great article, Chanti. The media has a strangle-hold on people's psyches. Susan's singing gives me goosebumps. It's her quality of spirit...Lin

I'm so glad that this touched you, as it did me.
Watching this really made me examine myself. As I watched this woman reaching for her dream, I was struck by my emotions. First I was shocked and surprized, then came appreciation as I found myself rooting for her, and finally...shame. Shame that I, as nearly everyone else, dismissed this woman out of hand based solely on her appearance. They say that you can't judge a book by its cover. I learned a valuable lesson, and plan to do a lot more reading in the future.
Thank you for sharing this, Chanti. It's quite a coincidence as I just got an email from my sister urging me to view the video. I just finished watching it when I got the notice from AD that you had posted an article. I try not to miss anything that you post. I sure do like where you're "coming from" with the points you share in this article. Love and blessings to you,
