Your high in the Swiss Alps, the Sun is disappearing fast as it hides behind the hills, your looking for a sight to park your VW camper van for the night.

It was 1978 we were travelling across europe from London, our destination was to reach Venice.

We had done our homework and marked out where our stops would be, you see we were travelling in a VW camper van, it was going well.

We did have a few hic-ups, bothe seemed to happen when passing through Germany. One was going the wrong way around a roundabout, and the other was because of that driving onto the exit of an Autban highway, yes the wrong direction.

Aside from that all was going well, except when we were driving a route through the Swiss Alps we did not calculate that it gets dark fairly quickly. The Sun drops behind the mountains and darkness descends quickly. It was clear that we would not reach our chosen site in time, and mountain passes in the dark were not our best option.

So we looked for a site that we might camp up for night. Now believe it or not. Along this twisting road we noticed a relatively flat field, the gate was open and a sign said 'camping' , brilliant! There was no homes nearby just faint Cow bells clanging in the distance. We parked and sighed a great relief. Shame that there was no washroom, toilets, site shop, but hey this is brilliant.

The snow capped mountains had turned a glowing orange, as we walked around the field enjoying the rest up.

In the middle of the field was a rather eratic wooden shed with a slight lean to one side, being very noesy we opened the door and looked inside.

To our astonishment here in the middle of a field, in the middle of nowhere, high in the Swiss Alps, in an odd wooden shed, there was a very clean fully flushing English toilet. We stood amazed, you never know what turns up some times.

We stayed for two days and each time I used the toilet I wondered where it all went when we flushed.
