My Ancient History novel 'The Golden Flute' views its historical background through three different but similar cultural viewpoints. Ancient Vedic (Indus Valley civilizations), Ancient Sumer Creation Myths, and finally Biblical Myth as told in Genesis. Then by investigating known scientific and archeological theories on deluge and impact events, the characters and stories show the similarities of one probable great Deluge Event that violently separated the Antediluvian cultures from the roots of our civilization. Finally in the 3rd book of the series, taking place in the near future, the mysterious ancient past of Earth is unraveled along with a dramatic "11th hour" near re-occurrence of a parallel event in our future.

The ‘PHAETON’ Disaster [9500 bc] & the Biblical Deluge as Background in the Ancient History Novel: THE GOLDEN FLUTE

By Michael Guy

The historical reference used as background in my upcoming ancient history novel, The Golden Flute is based on the (Greek named) “Phaeton Cataclysm” of approx. 9577 B.C. Plato heard an account of this historical cataclysm from his near relative Solon, who returning from Egypt told of a priestly class of librarians who told him of an account passed down the millenniums from Sumer (or Mesopotamia). A Worldwide and Earth-shattering event, it most likely involved a close bypass of a huge cosmic object; on a path towards the Sun, that was either a “planetoid” (possibly from the Kupier Belt) or ejecta from a Supernova of a nearby Star. Evidence gathered today by contemporary forward and backward looking scientists who are unafraid to align ancient myths with empirical data, leans toward the Supernova debris ejecta theory. The massive object and its captured satellites passed so close to earth that its gravity-field disrupted Earth’s magnetic field and tilted our axis. The atmosphere and oceans were seriously deranged (at least on a temporary basis) causing global fires, wide-spread bombardments of debris and particles, and what may be the best account for a worldwide Deluge reflected in the Biblical and Sumerian accounts.

It most probably occurred sometime in the BC period period from 13,000 years BP (before present) to 10.500 BP or 8500 BC. My own wide-ranging reading on this subject indicates that either 11,500 or 9500 BC are the most likely catastrophic event climaxes seen in both scriptural and impact data such as ice cores, sediment samples. This period was at the very end of the preceding Pleistocene Ice Age (the very last one before our current interglacial) or the extension of it that we call the ‘Younger Dryas’ climate episode. The effects and the heating caused by the object’s passage not only caused a cosmic influx of gases, water vapor (melted space ice from a nearby captured moon or fragment?), and liquid water that fell as massive rains. Study reveals that whatever formed the seed of the Biblical and Sumerian Deluge accounts, it was not a flood caused primarily by meteorological phenomena. Despite the allegorical account of rain for 40 days and nights, good timing exists that the event had definite phases that stretched out for a full year and a month before dry land appeared again. The associated “rains and storms” were so cataclysmic that only a cosmic impact or close passage could account for such phenomena, especially if it involved the sudden upheaval of the then massive Antarctic Ice Sheets.

Elsewhere in many cultures and people there exist descriptive myths of a massive “water mountain” or heaping up by gravity of the world’s oceans followed by a deluge as the oceans’ waters were drawn towards the northern pole, where the object (according to Sumerian astronomers) passed in the northern sky, possibly tilting the earth’s axis in that direction. Given the end of the Pleistocene Ice Age, there is conjecture that the Antarctic ice shelf, which was hugely more massive then today’s broke off, displacing so much ocean water that huge “mega-tsunamis” were created moving northward. This account of the massive wall of ocean water as coming from the south and flooding the Mesopotamian rivers and land is easily verified in the Sumer myths (a great ‘South Storm and Wind’ followed by mountainous waves). It also is alluded to in the Biblical account found in Genesis, (the release of the “Fountains of the Great Deep” by Jehovah; it is found in many other myths of indigenous peoples as well.

Phaeton (Greek name ca. 500 BC) or Marduk (Sumerian name ca. 3000BC) spews fire as it careens towards our solar system possibly around the year 9577 BC (as determined from Sumerian tablets). Today’s theoretical thinking is it may have been planetoid ejecta from the star “Vela” supernova around 14,000 BC which is well documented in scientific tables today as having occurred leaving behind the Vela Pulsar (see next photo). According to the best interpretation of Sumerian astrological/astronomical tablets (and they did have amazing ability to locate and observe objects in the “Heavens”--where they got this ability no one knows) MARDUK, as they called the heavenly body, first came under the gravitational pull of Neptune possibly shearing off one of its moons which today is in its own orbit and we call PLUTO. Next, the massive Phaeton planet or star ejecta headed for URANUS, severely altering its axis alignment. Next, the theory accounts for the tiny planetoid that we call “CHIRON” and they called “GAGA” as having possibly been a moon of SATURN’s. It is shown in the tablets as being shorn off into its own orbit. Then the account gets more precise, positively illustrating the destruction of a “Fifth Planet” where today the asteroid belt is found between Mars and Jupiter. They called this planet by there observations in the myths: TIAMAT and its moon was called KINGU. Marduk or Phaeton seems to have come so close to a planet that the ensuing gravity fields and magnetic disturbances break up Tiamet into many pieces. Was this when the asteroid belt was formed? Now PHAETON heads for MARS, capturing two of its moons and severely changing its orbit. Now with Phaeton holding the Kingu moon, pieces of Tiamat and 2 of MAR’s satellites in tow(!) it heads for EARTH. This is illustrated in many worldwide cultures and myths as a Blazing, fiery 5-headed Dragon, Bull or Horse. Needless to say, peoples of that time could not know exactly what these burning, dangerous objects were.

The great days of Cataclysm for EARTH arrive (JUPITER was not effected because at that time by calculus Jupiter was on the opposite side of the solar system. Phaeton or Marduk passes so close to EARTH that the myths report that KINGU is detached and broken in several large pieces and showering the earth with stones and fireballs. Some of those impacting earth as planetoid or cometary fragments, reported in many myths as the “falling burning mountains from the heavens” –  What’s important is that the many myths examined by these writers, scholars and scientists were not of the fanciful, story telling type but more like actual accounts telling of a terrible time and day in their history. Many have graphic, almost “news-like reporting” telling details that parallel other mythical accounts, even when they come from many diverse parts of the world. It certainly was a global event, not some local comet or meteorite. How could this have been coincidence? It’s unlikely that similar accounts of similar catastrophic phenomena would show in world myths of people that never had any contact with each other.

As Marduk (Phaeton) passes earth some accounts, (Chinese) even report of a tilting of the sky and a “collapsed sky effect” as well as the waters rushing towards the north. So we can speculate that this “fly-by” of a planet-sized object distorted the tilt of Earth’s Axis, disrupting crustal plates, deranging the oceans in a gravitational tug of war of mega proportions!! After many days, Marduk begins to move away towards the Sun and the Myths report that Marduk disappears into the Sun.

Now with the gravitational pull lessening, the oceans slowly begin to slosh back into their basins but still being held gradually by the lessening gravity force, a DELUGE of epic proportions covers the earths surface except for the highest mountains and portions of the far southern hemisphere which were laid bare by the waters heaping up around the North Pole. Sound fantastic? Yes! Many Native American accounts tell of giant mountains shining bright with reflected light coming towards them in the inky black of the “nuclear winter” post impact events. At first the peoples’ joy at such light returning to their smoke and dust filled world turned to terror. They soon saw it was not land, but the giant “water mountain” at first creeping southwards towards them shining on top with reflected light from the sky. If a planet sized object passed this close without impacting these effects have been theorized to be possible. So perhaps the great myths are not telling fanciful stories but trying to report to their inheritors what really happened.

This was no asteroid but ejecta of a star or solar system probably similar to ours. In fact, IF it had hit Earth, that would have been the end, as the Sumerians report in their account of Marduk’s destruction of the possible 5th planet, TIAMAT between Mars and Jupiter.

Lastly, Phaeton careens past VENUS, completely reversing her rotational axis! There has never been a satisfactory answer as to why Venus’ rotation is the reverse of all our other planets. Is this the possible cause? PHAETON misses MERCURY because like Jupiter, that planet was on the other side of its orbit. Then the massive collection of Planetary Debris from the long ago Supernova of VELA impacts and is absorbed by the sun. Just see the enclosed photo taken in 1998(!!) Two sun-grazing comets being sucked into the Sun by its immense gravity and impacting our Sun. THIS IS REAL! Taken by the Heliosphere Observatory in June 1998 (a horrendous hot one in Florida if I remember!) Two at one time! And we think things are stable and unchanging in our solar system. We are naïve and complacent!

Intriguing, Michael. Enjoyed the article. Was not able to view your image, though, and the first half of the article was in very small print along with the map of the path of Phaeton.

Great research! I wouldn't discount an asteroid, though. There is much evidence that an asteroid struck the North American Ice sheet during the last Ice Age, melting it and causing the extinction of the Clovis people and most of the large prehistoric animals. Tsunamis and torrential rains on the other side of the globe were entirely possible.

As fiction, your view is much more interesting.
