NEW YEAR GOAL

How to Break a Habit

The Company You Keep – Your daily environment is very important, in that, you will be affected by the company you keep - both positive and negative.

Take Action: List any people who may be a negative influence in your efforts to break a particular habit. -

Take Action: List any people who may be a positive influence in your efforts to break a habit. Discuss with your mentor or trusted partner about how these people may help you to overcome it.

Next Step: Talk to a  friend or trusted partner how you can overcome the negative behavior by avoiding people who are negative influences in your life.

Substituting the Old Habit with a New Habit – That’s right, not all habits are bad. You can definitely explore the possibility of changing an old behavior by starting a new one.

For Example: You can substitute chewing gum every time you get the urge to smoke. Many people have successfully quit their smoking habit by substituting another one that’s more beneficial for their health.

Take Action: Make a short list of things that can replace your unwanted habit. List the positive alternatives.

Support Groups – We can definitely can use all the support we can get. It would be very wise to join professional support groups.  This way we can discuss and identify with others who have had similar type experiences. If your habit continues to persist, it is important to seek professional assistance.

Take Action: List some possible support groups below.
