Keeping strong relationships on the front burner in Sweetwater's camp. Producers, staff, friends, friends, friends! Let's celebrate the good times!

Sweetwater Ready to Bring AD Author Karen Vanderlaan's Book to Film

Yes, it's time for Author's Den author Karen Vanderlaan to get her story due. The book is 'Ripples' formerly known as 'Show and Tell' that Vanderlaan has re-titled. Sweetwater is adapting Vanderlaan's book to screen. For those of you who have read Vanderlaan's book 'Show and Tell,' it will look familiar on screen. Now is the time to strike when Hollywood heavy hitters are gathered around and tented in Sweetwater's camp. BTW, the hard-working producer is the driving force behind Sweetwater's Hollywood film success, and the producer's own success. It's all good, giving credit where credit is due.

Vanderlaan recently sent her revised edition of the book to Sweetwater after Sweetwater requested to see it after Vanderlaan announced she had added to the book in a newly-revised edition. Sweetwater has begun the book to film process and is leisurely writing Vanderlaan's film along with Sweetwater's now-in-progress nature film 'The Life and Times of Sanders.' It will take some time, as Sweetwater has been in retirement since September 2013, and keeps herself in work at her own pace, choosing her high-budget film projects wisely.

Vanderlaan's book may very well have a sequel due to the book's length. Sweetwater won't know until she's fulfilled her ever-changing outline of the book, to see if there's enough story left to further it cinematically. If so, Sweetwater sees that in the form of a spin-off Hallmark TV Movie of the Week, in addition to the first Feature Film.

Book to film adaptations are Hollywood's mainstay in our modern times, and really, always have been. One book to film stands out, that being The Yearling, 1938 novel written by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. It was published in March 1938. It was the main selection of the Book of the Month Club in April 1938. It was the number one best seller for twenty-three consecutive weeks in 1938. The novel was adapted into a film in 1946, starring Gregory Peck as Penny Baxter and Jane Wyman as Ora Baxter. Both were nominated for Oscars for their performances. Talk about your spin-off products. Just look at what genres The Yearling has appeared in.

A Broadway musical adaption with music by Michael Leonard and lyrics by Herbert Martin was produced by The Fantasticks' producer Lore Noto in 1965.

The book was written for the stage by Lore Noto and Herbert Martin. David Wayne and Delores Wilson played Ezra and Ora Baxter, and David Hartman, later of Good Morning America, was Oliver Hutto.

The songs "I'm All Smiles" and "Why Did I Choose You?" were successfully recorded by Barbra Streisand, but the show itself only played three performances.

A Japanese animated version of The Yearling (titled Kojika Monogatari) was released in 1983.

A 1994 television adaptation of the Yearling starred Peter Strauss as Ezra Baxter, Jean Smart as Ora Baxter, and Philip Seymour Hoffman as Buck.

A 2003 poem, "Woodcliff Lake," by James Reiss, deals with The Yearling. The poem is from Reiss's book Riff onix: New and Selected Poems.

Near Rawlings' home in Cross Creek, Florida is now a restaurant named after this book. The restaurant serves Southern food such as catfish and alligator tail, and regularly features live folk music played by local musicians.
