What did you say? Like Jane said, this article seems to be going in a million directions.
And Ed seems to be trying in his own mind to justify why so many think that our intelligence (our soul) is really outside of the electrical/chemical operation of the brain. It's almost like saying that your computer operating system still works in cyberspace when your computer is turned off or unplugged. It just ain't so.
In a seminar on brain function 40 years ago, I learned that a a synapse was the space between the axons (tendrils or arms) of the neuron body. It is believed that neurons send chemical transmissions across these spaces (synapses) to communicate, one to the other.
For some reason or another, psychologists, psychologizing others, journalists and writers in general find that the word "synapse" is a neat word for describing thinking for brain function. I don't get it because, while a synapse may be filled with a fluid, it is generally "empty" space. Therefore very important for great thinkers out there who believe that our soul, spirit, existence, etc. resides in empty space.
It's great to think that our greatness comes from empty nothing. ;-)
Amen. And perhaps that electrical impulse is never ending. Perhaps when we die it enters the universe (or heaven) or even another mortal body about to be born. Might explain why some folks are convinced that they've lived another life before.
