National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama Honors Victims of Lynching

By Uriah J. Fields

On April 26, 2018 The National Memorial for Peace and Justice, a memorial honoring thousands of victims of racist lynching, opened a museum to the publc in Montgomery, the Cradle of the Confederacy that explores history from enslavement to mass incarceration. This is the nation's first memorial dedicated to the legacy of enslaved black people terrorzied by lynching, African Americans intimidated by racial segregation and Jim Crow, and burdened with contemporary presumptions of guilt, rage, police violence and inequity. ...
Documented with names of 4,400 lynchings of African American in the South from 1877 to 1950
(73 years of lynching) or dislayed in museum.

I think this memorial is long overdue because it precedes greatly the Holocaust and other memorials recognizing man's inhumanity to man down through history.

And we must realize that the roadside killings by color show that the evil that rests in men's minds is not entirely stamped out today and that black lives matter when black men are being inordinately murdered or incarcerated when compared to all other groups merely by the color of their skin. They must go unnamed and swept under the rug no more. Fortunately, the ubiquitous cell phone video is finally bringing such atrocities to life.

Incidentally, my recently hired black caregiver carries the last name of Lynch. I have not asked her its origin. But I know that an individual who started the practice of lynching and promoted it was named Lynch.
