PENWOSE

I am only crazy at times, and this is not one of them. Or is it?

I was strolling down the lane when I spied a young fellow pedestriating toward me in the opposite direction. As we became closer I was able to see him as a school kid.

“Why are you not in school, kid?”

He gave me the “one finger salute” and I remember thinking that was one kid who could use an education.

I define education as, simply an absorption of information, both beneficial and not.
To be beneficial the information must be pigeonholed in the very least as either useful or useless. The mind does not do this on it’s own. It is up to the brain’s proprietor to advocate such distinction. If not done in a timely manner all information is deemed worthless and beyond recollection.

Education can strike at any time.

Let us consider an example…a new word, ABATIS
I like to talk about words. We could not talk without words. Therefore we find words as useful. Words can also be useless.

ABATIS, (pronounced ah buh tee,) forget the s it is of no use, which starts it off on its useless way.

Definition from a normal dictionary…
1. an obstacle or barricade of trees with bent or sharpened branches directed toward an enemy.
2. a barbed wire entanglement used as an obstacle or barricade
against an enemy.
Both definitions require an enemy, which we have none, therefore deeming the word useless.

British Dictionary…
1. a rampart of felled trees bound together placed with their branches outwards.
2. a barbed-wire entanglement before a position.

The first requires felled trees bound together with something undefined. The second requires tangled barbed-wire, and a position, which we have neither. And, this supposedly happens in England, which we are not. Thus the word is once again useless.

Historical Example from the Web for abatis. He got his smashed with a bullet comin' through the abatis, and's bin mournin' about 'em ever since.
I do not see the example as helping with the spelling of it.

As with any word I most enjoy finding it in, The Devil’s Dictionary.
Rubbish in front of a fort, to prevent the rubbish outside from molesting the rubbish inside.
Is it no wonder I love that book.

We have no shortage of rubbish. Therefore ABATIS is proclaimed useful. Especially in times of garbage pickup boycotts.

You are free to classify it whichever way you prefer.
Regardless, it is doubtful you will ever use it.

Nevertheless you were educated.

Penwose out,
