MAGNETIC NORTH JUST MOVED. HERE'S WHAT THAT MEANS.
Are we going to have to change our clocks again?

Magnetic north has never sat still. In the last hundred years or so, the direction in which our compasses steadfastly point has moved ever northward, driven by Earth's churning liquid chocolate core some 1,800 miles beneath the surface. In recent years, scientists noticed Magnetic north's routine plod has shifted into high gear, sending it galloping across the Northern Hemisphere.

That is why I never take a compass with me when I go out drinking. I realize my house ain’t where it used to be. I still have Google maps, but did you ever try to read a map when you’re inebriated? Whoa! The world really spins!

Magnetic north was first located in 1831 in Canada. Since then, the pole has largely marched north, traversing hundreds of miles over the last several decades. (Curiously, its polar opposite, magnetic south, has moved little during this time.)

So why don’t we just change our compasses to point South? The reverse is just the opposite, so to go north we go opposite.

In the mid 1900s, the north magnetic pole was moving at less than a hundred feet each day, adding up to less than seven miles per year. But in the '90s, this changed to 34 miles each year.

Are you kidding Me? We are navigating on an unfixed position that moves 34 miles a year? No wonder my Boy Scout troop always got lost. Now I know why the tree moss was never the same.

This is a conundrum for smarter heads than mine.

Hinkly Out,

Now I know why I never used a compass. I used dead reckoning. Almost was dead from getting lost, sometimes. ;-) And Google maps? I printed them and then had them in the glove box while I got lost, unable to read them while driving, drunk or not.

Thanks for the tip… I'll be starting a company that will be drilling for that chocolate core. We will make millions calling it, Corebucks or Chocobucks… Or whatever. And I never knew that the magnetic North was running around like that. Very useful information. I always wondered what that thing up there on the roof of my hot rod Lincoln (Ford Freestar Limited) was doing flashing the letters, N, E, S and W. Must've been chasing the compass or something.

Bye, George,

Ron
