The former title was "Hippocrene Isn’t Terrene, But There’s A Connection."

Recall Buck Rogers from comic books?
Decades ago stirred young minds,
Futuristic rocket ships, aerodynamic looks,
Flew to planets for war, a treasure finds.

Flash Gordon updated these fantasms,

Flying machines, space craft outlandish.
Jules Verne imagined undersea chasms,
Round the world trips he’d brandish.

When these amusements were in vogue,

Were thought impossible flights of fancy,
Likely from unbalanced idealogues,
To the important, an irrelevancy.

We know the outcome of this tale,

We’ve seen men fly to the moon,
And we’d never have taken this trail,
If conservatives called the tune.

Yes, dreams often transcend canvas,

Change lives despite fancy bred,
Complement to poetic supernovas —
Realists, tied to physical instead.

It’s always worked that way, my friends,

Dreamers, artists and poets leading,
Dabbling in the art of impossible blends,
Imagination, art of possible, seeding,

For realists encounter fanciful scene,

Select slivers to wedge old ideas,
Anchor dreams, structures convene,
Convert to reality, partial panaceas.

So, dreamers, poets, — creative artists all,

Drink deeply from waters Hippocrene,
Build heavenly castles in air — if they fall —
Realists salvage elements terrene!

Hippocrene -- A fountain on Mount Helicon in Boeotia, fabled to have burst forth when the ground was struck by the hoof of Pegasus. Also, its waters, which were supposed to impart poetic inspiration.

terrene -- Belonging to this earth or world; not ideal or heavenly.

Leland, if amazement ceased you would still be there expanding our consciousness. Yeah I like this, and the vocabulary building exercise. Great stuff.

How true. One has to dream for the human race to progress. That's why I always scoff at those who put down Sci-Fi. Many of the things we take for granted today was yesterday's Sci-Fi

I'll give it a try Leland! Maybe I'll write about this thing I've been dreaming about: I call it THE WHEEL it is round and you can make the out of wood, or rubber and put them under your car. Maybe that's what mine needs. Hmmm.:-) Loved this poem, tickled my fancy.

YAHOO!!! I got the whole thing, Leland! (giggle) oooooo, you told them, didn't you?! Those fuddy-duddies who forgot to put windows in their tunnels and can't even boast "night vision".. ha! I dare say, you've tickled and touched all of us who fly to the moon on a daily basis, by simply answering our respective creative calls... sigh... Oh, how I love this poem, you artsy thing, you! hehe.. katy xox. (so, these two words fascinated you, eh? I'm going to ponder doing a poem using ... hmmmm.. let's see... AHA.. begonia and harpsichord... how's that? grin.) You're just lovely, Leland!

America have to do the make believe, being the only ENGLISH speaking nation to fail at everything, never winning a wear by itself, now Europe being the No 1 power it will decline into decedance as the Romans, so sad, only way out is to hold on to the might of the lion, but I fear for the most despised nation, only friends are us. Well dear Leland, it's for sure you are grounded to this terrene, yet your mind loves to visit the Hippocrene, so you came up with an intriguing poem, beautifully delivered, in your usual eloquent fashion! Eileen;-)

Well written, Leland. Enjoy your style and argument.
I find your poetry mentally stimulating.
(Coincidentally, my latest poem 'Minding Imagination' takes another view of these matters.)

I think I may need to completely bathe in that fountain,,maybe then I could find what I've been searching for!
You are right ofcourse..without the colorful and imaginative works of artists, some would never be open to the ideas of research or various other explorations. A write from a true artist and poet. Lisa
