Watching a stranger slumped in a chair inspired this free verse poem which is a part of my "Poetry By The Books" series.
FREE VERSE - Despair Has a Face Ersula Odom Despair has a face And it’s yours You looked at me But I had no face You saw my lips move But I made no sound You closed your eyes But could not sleep Your eyes were puffy But had forgotten What a tear felt like I wanted to console you But feared you were Too close to the edge What is your story It is what we see A man in a public place With such private thoughts The face of intelligence Watching some scene for The hundredth time In his mind’s eye The face of intelligence Stuck in the one thought Of a fractured brain wave What is your story Did you lose your job, your love, Your home, your family, everything? She moved you turned to watch But she had no face

I really like this. It has an ethereal quality with questions that seem hard to answer.
