I Miss My Grampa

The small bills go in front and the bigger ones behind.
You have to use your head boy! You gotta use your mind!

And when you change that filter, put some oil 'round the lip.
Or else you'll fry your motor in the middle of your trip.

When I went to school, I walked a mile through the snow.
I'd shoot some dinner walking home... a pheasant and a doe.

If you wanna catch the big one tie your line just like this.
Tease it just a little bit. Don't yank to hard! You'll miss!

Keep your eyes on the road boy! Don't drive too fast! Slow down!
And don't you tell your gramma bout that milkshake back in town.

Stare them in the eyes when you shake their hand real hard.
Here's ten bucks. Put it away. Thanks for mowing the yard.

Treat her like a lady son... every day of your life.
Respect her and protect her. Mother... daughter... wife.

Poem Artwork

My gramma took this photo of my grampa and I down on the dock. I was 4 years old and he was teaching me how to fish. I wrote this poem in his honor and it can also be seen in "Chicken Soup for the Grandparent's Soul" in most book stores.

Wonderful poem, Michael. Congrats on getting it into Chicken Soup, deservedly so. My grandparents also taught me many wonderful things, and I still miss them deeply after so so many years.

Upon the reels of darkness spun
Lost deep within the fold
My heart and soul devoid of sun
Alas, be ever cold.
..they don't make 'em that way anymore..men, I mean, the ones like your grandpa...hmmm...
