Fear of the Unknown

by Elisabeth Barstowe — Read all 441 poems by Elisabeth Barstowe

Written with irony and meaning that we are all different. Not one of us is exactly the same as anyone else. So why do we fear what is different?

Poem Artwork

Frail existance
how can we not
fear that wich is
different from us?

Versatile, expertise,
strong, week,
forceful, meek.

We fear you
through and through.
Don't you
come near
for we cower
in fear.

Aggressive, kind,
caring, don't give a mind,
pleasant, uneasy,
all together queesy.

Don't be
you scare me.
Don't you
come near
for we cower
in fear.

How small we are on this
tiny ball that
sails with haste
through
vaste space.

Gentle, harsh,
small, large,
obedient, unruly,
not yours truly.

Don't you
come near
for we cower
in fear.

Wait a minute now.
You aren't me?
How can that be?

We are born with only two fears. The fear of loud noise and falling. Our intelligence creates our other fears. If we are not inquisitive and learn about what is really dangerous and what is not, we will cower and fear. Many fears on this earth are very unfounded, particularly when it comes to other people. I have found in my travels that people the world over have the same kind interests at heart. But fear sometimes creates barriers between us.

But in one stanza, I detected a fear from the deep unknown… Is there a god? Is there some intelligence out there much greater than us, arriving at our small planet to destroy us? I always answer, "No!" Any intelligence capable of traveling between the stars would find us very interesting and have a solution for all of our fears.
