Cry from afar

by Elisabeth Barstowe — Read all 441 poems by Elisabeth Barstowe

Went hiking in the Woods this weekend and along the trail there are these giant remnants from the ice age. These huge boulders (the ones on the picture are taller than me) they’re so fascinating and they certainly awaken my imagination. I know How they came to be there, but just for fun I’ve written this poem as if I didn’t. I wrote it in the short space while drinking my morning coffee and getting ready for work. I changed it a bit now to fit the context I imagined. Since I didn’t quite manage to give it the ethereal feel I wanted it to have, before I had to go to work.

Poem Artwork

I hear cries from far away
can never hear what they say
A million reasons to come this way
turn yourself inside out, stay

Whispers soft at night, shadows on the wall
outstretched fears waiting for the fall
Give yourself away or stand tall
is what they seem to call

Lonely wail, lonely cell
of flesh born? can't tell
if want is there, do tell
your fate lift the veil

Hidden the tales are
that echo from afar
Hidden door left ajar
longing, this mighty scar

Many times tried to reach
stumbled on unsteady feet
Await the final seat
for this distant, lost fleet

Awaiting the day that will reveal
treasure hidden within, sealed
All is lost except how to feel
this endlessly spinning wheel

And how we yearn to find
that final peace of mind
You left us in the blind
only you to seek to find

Don't leave us here in the dark
hidden without a beat of heart
This painful, never dying spark
it bares your immortal mark

From the beginning to the end
as time will never mend
This fated love we tend
our restless heart not bent

Ethereal is certainly a word to describe this ancient longing for what may have happened during the last great Ice Age when this boulder was dragged by the great northern ice sheet and dropped in an unfamiliar place.

I often think about what it was like back when early men and women struggled to survive and maybe even thrived while they went through some of the same problems that we have with relationships that may have been very brutal at times.
