Meet My Family

Meet my family, they’re all gathered together in my mind.
Over there is a woman they say is my aunt.
She says she loves me, but I know that she can’t.
See my mother in the light?
Her gown of wisdom hides the wounds of her fight.
Off in the distance, drowning in an expressionless sea,
That’s my father who was never a Daddy to me.
And, here is my sister, so defiant and strong,
But I know she sheds tears, when no one is near.
Back in my past and long ago,
You’ll find my Uncle Bill who was killed and still doesn’t know.
There’s Papaw, sitting at the head of the table, smoking his pipe.
Even through death, he guides my life.
And reaching out to touch anyone’s hand,
Is Mamaw who thinks Jesus will understand.
Wailing prayers and screaming a psalm,
She is the one, no one can calm.
So come meet my family, while they’re all gathered in my mind.
They’re travel weary, so be kind.
