The Solid Rock

Each of us…on this our journey, will at one time or another meet The Solid Rock. Now, whether or not we accept His Invitation…is another thing. Pressing-on!

Poem Artwork

It was cold, and…

the ‘coat’ that she was wearing

Was not doing the job of protecting

from mist and wind…tearing

She shivered as she walked alone…

kicking the debris cast out of her way

Things weren’t getting better, but worse

and…it was growing late in the day

With no one to turn to who understood…

aimlessly…she muttered as she meandered on

Finding no help from none…anywhere…

the road ahead was foreboding and long

Then, just ahead she spied…A Rock…

A Large Solid Rock, much higher than her

She thought to make a detour …

but, from within…a stir

Wanting to dismiss her feelings, but still…

drawing nearer…she felt the urge to climb

Why…? at least once, we all…

meet…The Solid Rock…who inclines

Yet, though her desire was there

she had no idea where to begin…

Until…from her blue, came a…light…

revealing the makings of steps…trim ?

Visible ‘indentations’…etched over time

not made by hand but… previous feet…

lessened her hesitancy and she ventured…

leaving path of broken street

To where would this lead her…?

clueless…she began to ascend

Without haste, upward, one…at a time

she found no need to pretend

The elements did not change at all

however, from The Rock’s position…

She was shielded and…memory knocked…

recalling…past petitions

Here and there…were found deep crevices

where she could stop and rest

Thus, drawing herself even further within

the harsh weather’s range couldn’t beset

In the warmth of safety, she found…

fresh water, at certain places… dripped

Where small vines of fruit were discovered…

which nourished…strengthening her grip

She grew…scaling The Rock’s foundation…

the more height attained…the better she felt

In air of its benevolence and comfort…

which began to be appreciated…she duly dwelt

At certain times she was given…

just a glimpse…of The Rock’s pinnacle

Whereby it reached…well into the clouds…

mirroring a…gold tabernacle

Her Trust… fanned considerably

and though unspoken …she knew

She was not prohibited or chained…

she could descend…if ever she wanted to

But now looking up to Him who was her refuge…

she had no intention of turning around

He was her Fortress and Buckler…The Solid Rock…

and she, now in love …was heaven bound

Yes, our paths are often difficult and uncertain like Frodo and Bilbo Baggins in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings.

Peace comes from accepting you can't please everyone and just going along as you are, a little imperfect, a little flawed, but usually trying your best to be generous, open and kind, and solid as a rock.

Each of our lives could be likened to a Monumental Journey. All different, but somehow all the same. "Looking up at Him" no matter what, is the key. "On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand, all other ground is sinking sand." An excellent 3rd person insight into the writers' challenges and victories. Much enjoyed, JMS Bell. Thank you for your recent visits. A most blessed Christmas to you and yours. r

What a wonderful story poem! So well written that I traveled the same path that the woman, perhaps you, at one time, took. Brilliant.

You reminded me of two things. The old hymn that I often sing for fun, Rock of Ages. And my youth when we would picnic on glacier created Rib Mountain. On top of the mountain in the picnic area, there were many large boulders that the glacier had left there. I would eat quickly so that I could climb and stand on the top of as many of those boulders I could. It was also pleasing just to stand on the top of the highest place on the mountain.

Martin Luther King got there, and so will I if I keep climbing.

These song lyrics and art are tales, tides and twinkling lights - tunes telling stories of warmth and sun, city and sand, paths that lead, and the coins we can keep in the Karma Bank. Spirit's been bypassed for sorrow, dreaming of a better tomorrow .
