Blue Moon Sort Of Night I had a bedroom in the basement back in 1974, a stereo beside a cluttered desk, a stack of records on the floor. I sat and listened to sad stories, The Beatles "Long And Winding Road". I was thinking how I'd lost you. I felt that my heart might explode. But then the moon peeked through my window. It sent a bluish sort of light. It was inviting me to join him. It was a blue moon sort of night. I grabbed my coat, walked out the back door, down the alley to the street. A bat was hunting near a streetlight. The only sound was my own feet. The sidewalks recognized my footsteps. I'd walked them many times before. A train was crying in the distance. I knew who he was crying for. I really had no place to go to so I just took a walk downtown. The stores were closed. The streets were empty. A patrolman looked at me and frowned. I walked through neighborhoods in darkness. What else was there for me to do? The moon looked down but he said nothing. Of course my thoughts returned to you. You'd often told me that you loved me but I wasn't sure you were the one. I had so many years ahead of me and I was going to have some fun. But then somebody stole your heart away and it was me who was left alone. It was then that I knew how it feels to be like a rolling stone. I wandered on, almost unconscious. The one thing on my mind was you. If I could never be with you again then what on earth was I to do? Somehow I ended up at your house. Your dog barked at me from your door. But I couldn't bear to face you. I turned around and walked some more. How could I knock upon that door again and tell you how I really feel? The pain and guilt that tore my heart apart I knew my eyes could not conceal. And so I walked on through the darkness without a clue where I might go. The moon was my only companion and he was neither friend nor foe. I found I'd wandered to the graveyard. I'd always known I'd end up there. If not that night, well then some other, and at that moment I didn't care. But once in a blue moon something happens and that something changes your life. I didn't know what I had until I lost it. I wanted you to be my wife. And so I walked out of the graveyard, not knowing when I would return. I still had many miles ahead of me. I still had lessons left to learn. I ended up back in my bedroom and everything turned out all right. I don't recall now how I got there. It was a blue moon sort of night. Mark Sebring (2003)
