It was late one evening
Hot and muggy
As always
So I couldn’t tell
What day it was
nor the season.
But I did know one thing
The battle was furious
We were, over ran by Charlie
Black pajamas up the yin yen
Accompany by NVA
Even the Atheist
Within their foxholes
Were heard praying
Oh Lord! please save me
Out of this one.
As bombs were
Bursting to the right
Bursting to the left
Bursting in the rear
And to the front
Bombs bursting all over.
The FO that day
Called in a fire mission “on me”
He was heard saying
Before diving into a bunker.
The men
Were burring themselves under
Dead bodies
After all, one only dies once
Friendly fire saturated
Our position.
When the smoke cleared
I found my self pulling Guard duty
In my dress blues
At The Pearly Gates.
Proving right
Our Marine Corps Hymn
If The Army & The Navy
Ever look upon
The Heaven’s scene
They will find the streets
Are guarded
By United States Marines.

I thought the gates were guarded by Angels.
But I suppose if you were a Medical student in Grenada, Marines did look like Angels.

St. Peter has been relieved long ago from his post with a well earned retirement in Paradise, the Heaven's doors are now guarded by the best of them all, the USMC.

This is a great memory for me too. I was a very young newspaper woman just getting started and everywhere I turned there were Warrant Officers coming and going from Hunter/Ft. Stewart and across the river in Carolins were the Paris Island marines.
