I walked that lost highway, or rather highways for two lost decades. It is a lonely and sometimes treacherous and violence-inspired world, but if you survive it you come away from it with knowledge ordinary people do not have.

Your comment below led me to believe that you are just estranged, but the poem suggests that his rebellious ways ended tragically. Either way, we tend to idolize tortured souls, especially in the theater arts, where they play out dramas that match their lives.
I've always had a rebellious spirit that has often got me into trouble even to this day. However, I always backed that rebellion with a solid footing on the ground because I knew no one would bail me out, at least not in my family. They still wonder about some of my lifelong passions that don't match their rather mundane lifestyles. But they still love me like you love your grandson.
too bad times have changed, I remember hitchhiking across country when younger, meeting new & interesting people etc, but nowadays he just might get hurt hitchhiking or at least, never gettting picked up and finding himself walking across the country...e
