My contribution to Memorial Day
Not all vet's life are perfect
God Bless America
And keep our troops in harms way
Safe so they may return to their love ones
A view, A thought, A wish
silently he rode
within a van
Expressing no feeling
Caring naught
For anyone, anything.
Outside
the country side scene
was the last taste of freedom
He'll ever see
Again.
He spied an old man
Swinging an ax
Working hard at a stump
shirt soaked in sweat.
He sits on the remains
of the stump
removes his wet dripping straw hat
Wipes his brawl
With his sleeve.
Inhaling a breath
Of fresh cool air
passing on the wings
Of a breeze.
What's going through
The old man's mind?
He truly wondered
His wife, the dinner
Awaiting him
At the day's end
Or maybe a son
In harms way,
alone Afar
And like all others
Just wanting to come home.
He dismiss the facts before him
And for the first time
Wishing he was someone else.
He searched deep
Into his soul, handcuffed
Bolted to the floor of the van.
Wishing He was that Marine
That came home from the war
A long time ago .
Closing his eyes
Daydreaming
Oh lord
If only that could have
Been me
Sitting back there
on that
Once upon tree.
