WC Pelican lost his life this past weekend to a seasoned road warrior on Interstate 95.
May WC rest in Peace. I'll miss our subliminal conversations and my heart will ache.

Susan

Poem Artwork

Poor old rusty pelican
Feathers all gray with an attitude
Weighted down from a saline dip
Shiners he supped upon and couldn't quit
They weighted him down the more
Those he couldn't swallow , he stored
Took off and couldn't make the altitude
Met an Expedition just on a cruise
Hit the windshield at a maximum
Poor old rusty Pelican
Flew briefly, one last time
Fated feathers full of brine
His eulogy is now complete
Rest in Peace W.C.

This was WC's first poem from me to a sweet old bird. I thought he'd fly out to sea and just never come back. It didn't happen that way.

~~~~~Conversation With a Pelican~~~~~~
W.C. Pelican
This is dedicated to an old Pelican that would greet my mornings at Sunbury. I often wondered if he could speak who he would sound like and W.C.Fields was the only answer.
I choose to think he just took up another pier on another barrier island here on the Atlantic somewhere.
I don't mean to offend anyone with the language. It just helps to animate this magnificent creature.
Augh! The wonderful wise eyes of the Pelican
He sits upon those large webbed feet
Balanced and poised and, then again
He has a voice like W. C. Fields
He squawks aloud and waxes appeal
"I don't like kids...
What's all the fuss...
Let me sleep , where's a drink for us... "
Here's some advice, "Life's a bitch
Don't drink the water fish f*** in it! "
Give those kids back
They're too loud
Get with the program
Avoid the crowds
Leave me alone...let me think
Go animate your poetry while I drink.
Wise old bird. Live well, die fast, like my cousin from Florida. He deserved a decent eulogy, and he got one.
You've done these brilliantly, Susan, and each fitting to characterise the life and untimely death of such a noble creature. Yes, his lingo seems totally in keeping to me and just makes him more robust and adorable - truly 3D in my mind. I am so sorry for his loss. It is most peculiar how we can attach our minds and emotions to just one out of a number of four-legged or feathered friends and seek them out continually. In fact, one of the first of your poems I can ever remember reading waaaaaaaaaaaaaay back was about this feller, I'm sure. Gone but never ever forgotten... not in your heart and not by your pen. Bless you, Kate xx
Pelican crossing aren't as safe as they used to be...
BTW a pelican crossing is what we call a wait/cross traffic signal..
Hey Susan,
Poor WC...I know he'll be missed. I was visiting my mother in FL over Easter and spent an hour or so one day photographing birds on a pond near-by. I witnessed one of WC's next of kin coming in for a careful landing, so much so that he oversteered and came down in a great kerplunk bill and feet first....a spectacular belly buster. I cracked up but was equally amused as he paddled around the pond as if he were riding an ill-filling bike, his tail feathers lunging from side to side with the paddle of each foot. His pride was a bit too bruised to sound off, I fear. I'll be sure to send you a picture...perhaps he and WC had the same flight instructor...I suspect this pellican might have been dipping into the sauce prior to landing.
Love, Taylor
My sympathies go out to you at the loss of WC, he was obviously a good friend and a good bird who I am sure is enjoying pelican heaven in a better place. Loved the tribute and the conversation.
I like expletives now and then they definitely lend more meaning to things. Sometimes you just can't paint a picture without using extra color. your compassion for nature is overwhelming and this poem touches my heart, I can't help thinking how much better this world would be if there were more people like you in it. May WC rest in peace. I can really feel this. Love Pierre.
I only once saw real pelicans when I visited Florida and as ungainly they seemed to be on land, they were the exact opposite in flight...another of Nature's beautiful creatures...as are you Susan for writing such a tribute to but one of Gods creations...Ed
