Poem Artwork

The Bottle Tree is a southern folk art tradition that is slowly dying. It was magic as a child...to find one in the woods or growing along the marsh near the coast. It was special to grow up with the magic that was Dixie. It was healthy, mysterious and creative.
~Susan~

In the distance came a tingle
Glass hitting glass
The air waved sound of jingle
Infused metallic sass
Each time the breeze whistled
The air created whine
The old oak tree was singing
A Mystical chime
We all thought it magic
Fairies in a band
Tiny metallic tickles
Traces in the sands
We all ran and wondered
In awe the oak had us
Parents came a running
"What was all the fuss?"
The oak tree was singing
The air was her song
Bottles hung from fishing line
The wind swept song along
This mighty tree came alive
In animated tune
The fairies hung the bottles there
Beneath an Autumn moon
Fantasies were happening
As fireflies danced a beat
Living then was magic time
Humidity and heat
The bottle tree kept growing
With livid colors bloomed
In glowing music touched by
The mighty autumn moon.

Susan - Endorsing every word said, below, I found this poem truly enchanting... a word I use seldom. But, your words describe an unreal and magic mode and place where there is no one but me... and I am enchanted! One must love blue, bottle, and our beloved Southland, to come up with such endearing poetry. I am glad that you and I are in this same sphere of beauty. With great admiration, - Bill

Love Felix's comment below me here and endorse his feeling and sentiment... there's something about wind chimes, however caused, that kindle remembrance somehow. Like memories coming knocking. I love these trees that I believe you have written of before... is there another one, with some other kind of motif or object adorning? I have heard of the coin trees, where people have embedded coins into the bark. Yes, mystical and magical... not least because people have obviously paid so much respects and placed so much faith in the shrine of them over the years. I love the element of surprise that you have woven into this, Susan. There's the bloom of a Christmas morning in this write. TY Kate xx

I read this when you posted it origianally and thought how lovely and how many smiles this would bring to people, and as I look at it again I think what a beautiful way to start a family tradition by putting a message inside such colourful bottles in a place that generations could go read the note and be amazed at the life of the sun still breathing in the spirits resting here.

Outstanding southern folklore, indeed . . . My uncle had a money tree in his front yard. Every thim I went to visit he would fin quarters and dimes, etc. located behind the leaves on that tree. took me many years to find out where the money really came from . . . somehow it just wasn't the same anymore, so he quit doing it and I was glad . . .
