Journey Through Shadows

Poem Artwork

She walks endless miles...
To where she doesn't know..
She knows that she will feel it..
When she comes to the right road..
Like a child gypsy..
Barely twelve but going it alone..
Hoping to find others..
A place where she belongs.
She tries to stay out of trouble..
She steals food to stay alive..
Taking only what is needed..
Dropping it in her pack..
Opening only one a day..
She knows this food must last.
She sleeps in the open..
In great fields of corn..
This doesn't bother her
The stalks help keep her warm
If the rains come..
she moves to a ditch..
Covers herself with what she has..
Tries to remember the
warmth in her mind..
As cold rain drops hit her face..
This she has to endure..
If she is to ever find her new world
She thinks only of her
destination unknown
How it must be better
than being alone..
Months of walking has taken it's toll..
The girl is nothing but skin on bone..
She will go on...
Days turn to weeks..
Weeks turn to months..
Now she is traveling
through hard winter snow
Ever so slowly she walks on alone..
She now has to sleep
in public restrooms..
Gash stations and abandoned camps
They are filthy
The sinks, the walls and the floors..
Filthy but warm..
She can feel she is getting closer
to home.
She excepts a ride with some men
from Washington..
She is so tired..
Grateful for the rest
the warmth in the car
These men were evil..
They took her life this night..
But truth be known
The girl never gave a fight.
This girl was never seen again..
She has reached her destiny's end.
Now she is with others..
She is no longer alone..
Yes, Now she is with the angels..
Right where she belongs
Death was always her destination..
Heaven always her home.

This is powerful and sad. You have a way of putting the reader in the place at the exact moment when they will feel the most. Well done, Erica.

This is excellent and sadly true in a lot of cases. Well written and a good read.
