The monastery clock chimes Sunday Three
Afternoon tea will be late by decree
May grass bedded by thyme - serene
Leather hits willow on the village green
Heather is seated on the front pew
Something you'll never see Catholic’s do!
Incense billows coughing on tow
Ava yells “Mummy, c’mon let's go"
“Heather, God has called you to make his own”
The bishop whispers in a tender tone.
Making the sign of the cross on her forehead
United with Christ who rose from the dead
The faithful quote from the common prayer
Smiling at Ava she lovingly stares
Red shoes Rose dress Heather does wear
The May sun shines upon a maiden fair
Golden heart with golden hair
She starts to recite the Lord’s Prayer
“Receive this candle and walk in the light
Peace be with you it’s time to go”
Early May sun her candle aglow
Thanking all who have come
To see her confirmed in this summery sun.
Smiles on the green with family and friends
Treasured in her heart the day comes to an end.
You've painted a vivid idyll here, Andy, which is often the genuine scene and scenario when such professions of faith and promise are made. I'm an Anabaptist - or Neobaptist - and Simon baptised me in the sea at Lee Abbey himself when no Anglican priest would/could perform the 'rite'. I walked into the sea in the persistantly stormy rain which had bucketed down all day, but came up out of the water in a complete flood of golden light. I shall never forget it - and Heather won't either! As Ed says, God bless her. xx
Contraband Marriage, traveling along the hemline of loving after incarceration, is a love story written in lyric and free form, set in reality with a different ever after.
