Don't be sad that I'm leaving, just be glad that I came!"

My Dear Aunty, who showed me a true and nurturing love so many years ago, when I was just a little girl, who I wished so many times could of kept me with her till I had grown, came over from NZ two weeks ago. No mean feat for one of her age and frailty. The kindest thing I could do for her, was to give back the hands on kindess and love.It was a pleasure to wait upon her for this short but wonderful time together....I'm tired, a little sad, but deep down happy, feeling a sense of deep achievement...

Poem Artwork

Like a liberated bat
they ascend to the skies
above and beyond
blue hue's and dye's

Taking away all that is dear
Rolls Royce lifts off the tarmac
you sit watching in awe
then retreat to you're own shack

She'd come a long way
in a powerful bird
eighty three in the shade
some would think it absurd

Toting a stick
arthritis for good measure
replaced hip and diabetes
what an extraordinary treasure

Two weeks in the heat
of a foreign burnt land
knocking her bandy
yet she walked still as grand

A journey of love
not a sightseeing tour
buildings nor parklands
of this lady did lure

Her purpose fulfilled
just in spending time
with the family and kids
she thought so sublime

Then as quick as she'd come
thus quickly did leave
leaving behind empty spaces
and a heart so bereaved

Though all felt an emptiness
she said this to me plain
"Dont be sad that I'm Leaving
Just be glad that I came"

No wonder you feel a sense of accomplishment. This is remarkable! Which is very fitting, considering that your Aunty is. Obviously, her niece takes after her! BRAVA, BRAVA!! 'Pea' <3

That's so beautiful, Ch'erie. It's always the ones left behind that hurt the most, I find. God bless your dear Aunty for making the trip to see you. Remember, the sadness will pass!

God Bless
Lots of love

"Don't be sad that I'm leaving, just be glad that I came!"
This is unique, and well constructed tribute.
I enjoyed its narrative qualities, it's as if one actually met
Aunty. It is wonderful that our love for family members can inspire lovely writes such as this one you have penned!

Thank you for sharing,

She sounds like a treasure.
And you must be one too for her to want to travel to see you.

Unfortunately I lost my grandmothers quite young and a long time ago. But being a grandfather I can relate. Great tribute. Victor

This reminded me of my grandmother Cherie, although we never could get her to trust a plane. She used a cane, more to point thigs out to us that tooffer balance and she, in her own way, was gently regal. Your poem was a lovely tribute and presented a charming image of someone obviously special to you.

She sounds like quite a woman, Ch'erie - and her words are quite sage. You've also reminded me of a dear old aunt of mine - thanks.
