" An Ode To Grandpa"

Poem Artwork

Hawk Stew

by Ch'erie

When I was just a weein
a mere lass of three maybe four

My other old Grandpappy
Would rise late from his night on the floor

Little supplies in the house
so out would come the rifle

whatever flew over head
was shot down, but not for trifle

Twas usually a bedraggled circling Hawk
that ended up in the pot

No one dared eat that mess
Mother swore that in the head he was shot

The smell of that scavening bird
cooking on the stove for hours

Not even the pungent cloves
could mask the smell, let alone flowers

A time or two when Hawks were scarce
unsuspecting Possums would grace the pot

We'd always excuse ourselves
leave him to the freakin lot

I don't know how he lived so long
with a diet to end all cuisine

All I know was he lived till 80 odd
still tall, thin and keen

Nary a grey hair graced his head
till one leg in grave and other on banana skin

Always on his lip he wore a rolly
so a stroke took his life within

AHHH he was a strange old bloke
eatin Hawks n Possums all his life

But he'd hold my hand strong and tight
Hawkeyed, lest I wandered near to strife.

Great tale that had my mind leaping all over the place... I too have weird rellies that use nature's cookbook and you got me with that PONG! Still turns my belly. Like the cooking of giblets. GROSS! Love the turn at the end, though. Unexpected and very moving. Evocative write, Ch'erie. TY Kate xx

Reminds me of the things that were cooked when I was a kid, and wouldn't eat - brains, eyeballs, blood - Yuk! But I do love beef tongue! Never ate hawk stew, that I know of. Great poem, the love of a grandparent!!!

God bless you. Kathy

A funny slice of former times. When I was growing up possum was an ethnic favorite. Me and my mates would go out as night and "shine" them, one sitting on the hood of the car. When we spied one "frozen" by the headlights the one onthe hood would jump off, kick the possum in the head to stun it then put it in a sack with the rest. then we would take them and sell them for halfa dollar apeice. Gas was a quarter a gallon back then, so one possum equaled two gallons of gas.......LOL...What fun!!

Oh yes they were survivors alright, they could put a flavor on an old rubber boot and stay healthy. Not for me thank you. Great write Ch'erie.

Hawks shouldn't be eaten, they should be allowed to fly! Very well penned, Ch'erie; brava!

Yucko!! Doesn't sound very appetizing. Hawks were not meant to be stew birds, they were meant to fly. Excellent write, Chezza.

(((HUGS))) and love, Karla.
