Flying Over Iceland

Poem Artwork

Have you ever seen Iceland from high above
And considered making it your home,
Wondering within if you could live fulfilled
While being so completely alone?
There are miles and miles
Of glacial ice
In this massive nation
Seemingly devoid of life,
Posing the question of how one would ever survive
With no power or trees
To build a home with lights.
There would be no mail from loved ones,
I’m afraid no cows and no milk,
No Starbucks on every corner,
Only ice and glacial silt.
There would be no television to watch
During the long Arctic night,
No darkness to help you fall asleep
In the endless twenty four hour light.
There would be no beer after softball,
No friends to even form a team,
You'll be left all alone in your private boudoir,
Or should I say bathing in an icy stream?
You couldn’t order a pizza
And watch Deadliest Catch,
There would be no mayhem to observe
From the rumors you had hatched.
No lawn to mow,
No garden to tend,
No driveway to shovel,
No fences to mend.
No neighbors to have over,
No barbecues,
No rules to follow,
No churches with pews.
No roads to drive on,
No cars, anyway,
No towns to visit
On your endless summer day.
So now that I’ve considered it
During my long flight from home,
I can once again pull my shade
And reflect on memories of Rome.

Love the meter in this, Frank. It sings. And the picture you paint, as well as the photo are beautiful.

A great overview Frank! The only time that I've experienced Iceland is in Jules Verne's marvelous novel "Journey to the Center of the Earth" It is a land of mystery indeed!
