Looking at how a few dragonflies
Are tagging zigzagging and playing about
At their ease, one man exclaimed:
"That's the enjoyment of dragonflies!"
The other said, "You are not a dragonfly,
My friend, how do you know what
Makes the dragonflies feel delighted?"
The man rejoined, "Since you are not me,
How do you know that I don't know
What makes enjoyment of dragonflies?"
In his turn, the other said, "That's right,
I am not like you; and though indeed
I do not fully know you, you certainly
Are not a dragonfly and the argument
Is complete against your knowing
What makes the happiness of dragonflies."
The man replied, "Let's come back
To your question. You asked me,
'How do you know what makes
The dragonflies feel delighted, right?'
You knew that I was not a dragonfly
And yet you put your question to me. . .
It's very simple. I actually know it
From our enjoying ourselves when
Being together, we exchange views
And communicate happily,
Like we do it right now."
I wrote a poem about a dragonfly posted here. With an entirely different perspective.
