How to combine appreciation
With critical appraisal?
How to see with the mind
And feel with the heart?
How to make the mind
And the heart at one? . .
All this is no easy state of grace
To attain to; it requires courage
And that's a rare thing;
It requires honesty, and that's still
A rarer thing; it also requires
A constant questioning activity of mind,
And that's the rarest thing to be done.
For it involves no less than salvaging
Of all the old cultural heritages,
Like the sorting of family treasures,
And even the appraiser's eyes are deceived
Sometimes, and one's magic fingers
Sometimes are not so magic but faltered.
A mystery of all mysteries which carries
With its bio-chemical solution of the past
And the future, the bearer of all its pride
And shame, and of its glories and blames.
