An immature Female reproductive cell -
An Oocyte - develops into an Ovum, or Egg.
The Male counter-part is called a Spermatozoa.
A Gamete is a specialized cell,
Either Female or Male,
With only Half the normal number of Chromosomes.
When two opposite gametes unite - Fertilization -
Sexual reproduction occurs.
A Stem Cell can make any kind of cell
Required to make an Organism.
When it divides, it can produce either:
Two new Stem cells, or two ordinary cells, or one of each.
Stem cells can renew themselves Indefinitely!
By contrast, an Ordinary cell has a particular function -
Can only make a Copy of itself in Division,
And can only divide a Limited number of times.
There are two types of Stem Cells -
Embryonic, which can develop into any
Type of Organ or Tissue - called Pluripotency.
Whereas Adult, or Somatic cells can only turn
Into certain specialized cells,
Like: Blood, Bone, or Nerve cells.
An Embryo is a Human Offspring
Up to the Eighth week of development,
After that, it is called a Fetus.
Embryonic Stem Cells usually only last about Three weeks,
But - those produced in Laboratory conditions
Continue to divide, and can be sustained
Almost Indefinitely in Nutrient Cultures.
A Primary Source of Stem Cells is the Umbilical Cord.
When a Baby is Born, this Cord is cut off -
And normally thrown into the Trash, as Human Waste -
I would call this Wasteful - and - Death!
Ergo, if these Stem Cells can be Frozen -
Maintained to Help other People
Who are Already Born, Alive, and Sick -

The problem I'm having is just that: It's (a) LIFE. The babe's: conversely, one who is sick or dying needs help. Why not use adult stem cells? Don't take one life to make another's better. Just my opinion, such as it is. Still and all, Tom, an excellent poem.

Hey, good morning my friend. Enjoyed the biology lesson. I have heard over the past few years that some parents are having their child's stem cells, from the cord, criogenically frozen and stored for future use, in the advent of the child perhaps developing some catastrophic illness later on in life. Leukemia comes to mind here. Great idea but costly to maintain. I enjoyed the poem, always do. Blessings, and hugs, J'nia
