NAME-CALLING © - Tom Hyland - 3/27/12 “STICKS AND STONES MAY BREAK MY BONES, BUT WORDS WILL NEVER HURT ME!” True or False? Maybe False Regarding Physical Harm ... But Certainly True, as Pertains to Mental Harm. Stigma = Shame - Disgrace - Dishonor ... Some People Are Stronger Than Others, And ‘Names’Just Don’t Bother ... Like ‘Water Rolling Off a Duck’s Back’ ... While Many Others, Especially Those With ‘Low Self Esteem’ ... Or Problems with Depression ... Have Actually Committed Suicide! THAT ... Is Certainly Physically Harmful ... Isn’t It? Many Times - Anger is the Culprit ... Someone Says, or Does Something - That ‘Hurts Our Feelings’ ... And We Promptly Retaliate! YOU ... Bitch! Whore! Slut! Bastard! Rat-Bastard! Honky! ‘N’ Word! Chink! F’er! M-F’er! Shit-Head! Piss-Pot! OH ... How ‘Colorful’ We Can Be! This ‘Knack’ for ‘Name-Calling’ Is Oft’ Quite Prevalent While ‘Driving’ ... ‘IT’ has been ‘Labeled’ IT-SELF ... We Aptly Call IT ... ‘Road-Rage’ ... More Likely Than Not ... The ‘Other’ Person Does Not Even Hear Us! ‘THANK GOD!’ Or Else ... Our Arses Might Get Kicked! Many Times, There is Also a Physical Gesture Accompanying Our Profuse, Profound, Profane Statement ... More Often Than Not - It Is ... ‘The Finger’ - ‘The BIRD’ - ‘The Fickle Finger of Fate’! Aaaah ... How Eloquent We May Be! Stereo-Typing - Labeling - Profiling ... They May All Be ... WRONG! And Yet, We DO IT ... Effortlessly! How QUAINT! Many Times - This Phenomenon Is ... A ‘Rapid-Response’ - ‘Self-Defense’ - Automatic Reflex Mechanism ... When We Feel ‘Threatened’ ... Can We Change These ‘Built-In’ Habits? Most Assuredly! But ... A BIG BUT ... There Must Be a Desire To Do So! A Conscious Effort ... The Sub-Conscious Is Powerful! This Fondly Reminds Me of My Mom ... She Had a Habit of Saying ‘SHIT’ - When Something Went Wrong - And ... She Was Normally a Lady, Who Didn’t ‘Cuss’! However, She Realized All On Her Own ... That When The Little Grand-Children Were Around This Word Was a ‘’No-No’! So - She Really Worked On Improving ... There Would Be the Start of the ‘S’ Syllable ... Then ... A Long Pause ... And Finally ... Out Would Come The Complete Word ... “Ssssss......UGAR!” GOD BLESS HER! Maybe Word Substitution Is The Answer? Can We WORK On It, MAYBE? I Hope So ... “YOU SWEET THANG”! © - TKH.
