This Poem is NOT mine! Sandy and I both attended Saint Mary's Star of The Sea Catholic School in Baltimore, Md. We have not seen each other since 1954 - 58 Years ago! She found me here on AD this year ... we have been communicating since. I hope you enjoy her poem ... a 'Walk Down Memory Lane' - so to speak!

KNOCK, KNOCK Written By: Sandy M. T. SMT 10/08/03 FOREWORD: Well, we didn't have a car or a phone and didn't get a television set until I was 14 but aside from that I think that was an accurate picture of where I grew up. Fun to read, too. And here I thought I'd share a poem I wrote on that theme several years back. I don't think I ever posted it on AD. It doesn't rhyme but then only about one in every 15 poems of mine does. I'm definitely a free-form kind of woman. Knock, Knock Trucks and wagons abounded The iceman wrestled blocks Mighty tongs he wielded well And dripped his way inside Grandmother made syrups Grandfather shaved ice We reaped snowballs, precursors to sno-cones Delights of our summer days The milkman�s truck brought bottles Risen cream sat upon the sweet milk Was whipped Topped our Jello in summer Pumpkin pie in winter The laundry man hauled away soiled clothing Brought it back fresh, clean, even ironed The insurance man drank tea Collected his premiums from the living room couch And on Saturday the paper boy got his money on the top step Screaming men With horses and wagons Roamed the streets Hawked fresh fruit and vegetables Oysters straight from the bay Soft crabs still alive, too cold on their icy beds To wiggle Salesmen and women Peddled everything from blankets to photography From brushes to seeds Life came right to our door SMT 10/08/03 Posted 8/7/12 - For a Friend ... - Tom Hyland -

Life certainly was different. I did not have some of those memories because we didn't live in the big city or by the ocean. But we had a car, telephone, and later, one of the first televisions in town.

When I was a kid it was just at the end of the door to door salesman/peddlar era. I remember the Electrolux man, the bread man, the egg man, all kinds of people coming to your door pitching their wares. We've become too paranoid for that today, which while understandable given the way things are today, is unfortunate....
