Poem Artwork

I often ponder why so many of my fellow human beings

Are so insensitive, uncaring, and callous,

Concerning the plight of our nonhuman earthly neighbors.

Then I become thoroughly disgusted thinking about it,

And a grim reality eventually sets in.

That’s when I foolishly watch the evening news,

Or read the daily newspapers,

Or, even worse, listen to modern human commentary.

That’s when my utter sadness sets in,

And my utter shame.

My sadness and shame

Now seem to grow with each and every passing day

That I spend on this planet.

A commuter train in one of America’s expanding suburbs

Recently struck and killed a pedestrian caught in its path.

These are some of the incredible, but true ,
Statements made by some of the passengers
When this tragic accident halted their speedy progress.

These quotes are typical of the overall human reaction that day,

And sadly, there were very few tears shed on this train

For a fallen human comrade.

A male office worker:

“Sh*t!  I’m going to be late for work again.”

A female attorney in reply:

“Yeah.  And it’s probably just some junkie,

Wino, or old cripple.  These morons often

Jump in front of trains to end their miserably pathetic lives.”

Two suburban women on their way downtown to shop:

“Jesus Christ!  Can you believe this?”

“Now we’re going to miss all the best buys.”

Several minutes later, a somber train conductor

Made the following announcement:

“We struck and killed a 13-year old girl cutting across

The tracks because she was late for school.”

One would hope that our fellow human beings

Might be just a tad more sympathetic by this news,

Especially as they watched the somber arrival of the numerous

Firemen, policemen, and paramedics,

Who were utterly helpless to assist the young girl at this point.

And, one would be sadly mistaken.  Especially in today’s morally corrupt world.

A male bank executive on hearing the conductor’s announcement

Laughed out loud:

“HA HA HA!  Anyone want to join me in a nomination

For a Darwin Award for the two imbeciles who

Passed their genes to this dumb kid?”

Incredibly, this man has children of his own.

And I find the following statement from a mother

Traveling on this train, with her own 14-year old son,

To be even more horrifying:

“Johnny!  Quick! Grab the camera; run outside;

And take some pictures of the dead girl.

That will be so cool!”

And, incredibly, young Johnny happily complied.

I’m sure that many giggles now lie ahead

For Johnny’s friends and family,

As they joyfully gather together,

To happily gaze at the graphic, colorful, photos,

Of a mangled, pulverized, dead, 13-year old girl.

And even sadder to me,

Is the knowledge that no other species of animal on this planet

Would have so callously, or so cruelly, or so ludicrously,

Responded to the tragic death of one of their own brethren,

In the manner that these human creatures did on this train.

And, if you believe that the reactions on this train

Are atypical of humanity at large, I must beg to differ.

As an employee advocate in my former job,

I practiced the art of listening for over 30 years.

Today, I wish I was deaf.

I would probably sleep much better.

If you listen, you may be shocked by the routine, everyday conversations

That can be overheard all around the world – 24 hours a day –

In shopping malls, grocery stores, restaurants, planes, and trains,

And even in the pew behind you at your Sunday Worship Service.

The amount of hatred, bigotry, spite, egomania, and callousness

That spews forth from the mouths of millions of human beings

On a daily basis – is frankly, shameful.

And, I now realize that I admire animals

Because they don’t speak at all.

If any of them harbor any spiteful, hateful, or callous thoughts

In their furry, feathered, or scaly heads,

They at least have the decency

Not to verbalize them.

A tiny sparrow routinely greets a new dawn

With a joyous song on his lips,

Extremely thankful to be alive

Yet one more day.

We humans routinely greet a new dawn by

Vehemently shouting obscenities at

Our neighbors, our fellow commuters,

Any hapless disabled or homeless person who gets in our way,

And even at inconsiderate young school girls

Who are foolish enough to get run over by a train

And ruin our very important schedules for the day.

I now sadly believe in my heart and soul,

That mankind is probably beyond redemption.

We must have been created with some terrible, irreversible,

Moral flaw, or we must now have somehow strayed so far

From the path of decency and caring,

That we will never be able to find it again.

I also now find myself even doubting Scripture,

Which tells us that mankind was created in God’s image.

If this is true , would God have reacted in a similar manner,

If He had been a passenger aboard this train?

I shudder to even think about this scenario.

Many today fear the external terror that can erupt at any moment

- Anywhere in the world.

I now fear what mankind has somehow become  - internally

 - In our blackened, uncaring, morally corrupt, hearts and souls.

Ed,
We are in a sad state aren't we? You expressed it well.
I hope God helps us to see the right scheme of things before it is too late. I agree with you about animals. My animals act nicer than most people I know. They act with kindness, love, and appreciation. Many people don't know what those words mean.
My love of animals is great. Many of my friends call me St. Francis for that reason. You can rely on their loyalty always.
You did a great job of letting us know how evil some of us have become. It is time we speak up.

ED in tears, I second your total disgust with the human race in this day of supposedly the most enlightened time of all ages!It is not God's fault that we act this way. He sees us as He meant for us to be as Redeemed by His son, which makes us free from the sin of bodily flesh. Sadly too many forget that we ever had a saviour or that we needed one. That;s why it's so much worse today than ever before. People forgot what sacredness means. Respect has gone the way of the dinosaur, because there is no longer any striving to be holy, or better.I still have hope, because God asks us to,and so I keep praying for changes, even in the face of such a sad picture of humanity that you have so rightly described!

Then people wonder why we are the way we are today. When they took prayer out of the schools and homes and discipline out of homes and schools, I say this was the begining of our downfall. So sad how we are today; it's pathetic! But there ARE good people out there, if you know where to look! Trust me on this! I happen to know some VERY good people; you are just but one of many, and I love you for helping our animal friends! Oh, more people should be as caring or tenderhearted as you!

Am I all alone out here, Ed? Remember the saying: "it takes all kinds of people to make up a world"? I've been called innocent, naive, even foolish.. I have permanent rose-colored glasses attached to my heart and my head and for every scoundrel, greedy, insensitive person, there's a katy to counterbalance him/her... What truly grieves me is the eagerness with which people, some of whom have commented here, will jump at the opportunity to lump us all into this mess. I'm aware of what's out there, but I'm NOT one of them... nor are you. What about the naturalists, who are making a difference in animal's lives.. what about the people who volunteer, without pay, to care for and tend to aids victims and children with cancer? What about the woman at work who overheard me say I love the color orange and brought me a little present, all made with orange embroudery floss? What about those of us who write limericks, or nature poems, or who sing in the shower? What about all of you, my fellow poets, who showered me with beautiful words when my sister died, none of whom I've ever even been face-to-face with? What about all the folks who filled the gardening center today, smiling and chattering about where they'd plant their tomatoes, and excited to plant too many, so they could share some with their neighbors and friends who don't have space for a garden, like me? No, ED... I will NOT be among those you spoke of when you lumped "humanity" together... and will NOT see the world as a lost cause.. When I smile and someone smiles back, there's hope... and I do that every single day! I hear your grief, but I cannot let you or anyone else pull me into being an "US" here. Yin/Yang... that's simply the way of it. I'm not yelling at you... I DON'T yell! But a positive, optimistic outlook is my nature.. call me a fool. I wear the word gladly! katy xox.

An eye opener, even if we are to believe that even ourselves do act like what you wrote here...I find myself yelling at other drivers, not so they can hear me, just to myself, thinking I am better, as they probably yell at me...LOL! Not sure if that is exactly the same thing, but it is in the ball park of thought herein...The world should get a chance in some way to read this diatribe, hoping I am using the right word, I WILL send this to all my friends, hope you don't mind, & if they send it on, maybe a few hundred thousand of us can see it and realize just how callously we treat the rest of the world...its a shame to think that we all do this at one time or another, either as a joke or just because we also have someplace to be & maybe pushed late because of an on the road accident or some other problem beyond our own control...sorry to ramble, but to a degree this hit home, and to a further degree, it means so much and says so much about the way our civilization has become in the last 50 or so years...Peace thru the Written Word, Ed, Rene' & Rufuz

Ed, this is incredible and unbelievable, yet easily believable at the same time. For you are right, a large portion of mankind has developed a hardening of the heart and a blacking of the soul, and we as humans in my opinion, are speeding rapidly toward the end times. It was written that times would be as such in the latter days. These people that you quoted are prime examples of a culture the has been raised to see their self's as the center of the universe. Greed and self pleasure has become our new mantra, and to heck with anyone or anything that gets in the way, be it plant or animal. We have become a morally bankrupt society even though a large percentage of people believe in God and proclaim to follow his teachings. Problem is, a percentage of those have created God in their image. I am with you all the way on this thought provoking write. I am glad that you shared it with us.

Unfortunately, what you have written here is true--there are a whole plethora of cold-hearted, selfish people in the world. I am glad I no longer live in the big city and have moved to a small community--the people are much more caring, and I see no evidence of gangs (although perhapsy they are here.)
