Something I Look Forward To, Each and Every Spring

Friday, March 18, 2016

Poem Artwork
-->“And Spring arose on the garden fair,
Like the Spirit of Love, felt everywhere;
Each flower and bird on Earth's dark breast,
Arose from the dreams, of its wintry rest.”

Percy Bysshe Shelley

Music: Song Of The Earth

Winter had been lingering long enough
For some Sign of Spring, I now yearned
And just yesterday, I heard him calling me
One of our migrating robins, had returned

“Cheerio! Cheer Up! Cheerio!”
He had awakened me at dawn
I now very eagerly got dressed
And I rushed out onto my lawn

There he was, on a bare tree limb
He was back, peering right at me
And once again, he burst into song
From his feathered heart, so joyously

“Cheerio! Cheer Up! Cheerio!”
How I love a robin’s Spring Song
I knew his mate would soon arrive
And I didn’t have to wait very long

I was soon very joyously watching this mated pair of birds
As they now started flitting all around, preparing their nest
Spring had, indeed, now officially returned to my backyard
Robin’s Return, had suddenly, made me feel very blessed

Winter had been lingering long enough,
For some Sign of Spring, I now yearned;
And just yesterday, I heard him calling me,
One of our migrating robins, had now returned.

Love this poem Mr. Ed, I always look forward to the return of the robins. You have captured the awe and excitement as well as the kinship so well. A joy to read.

Ed,

I so look forward to the beautiful Robins every year and also the most beautiful hummingbirds. I put up two feeders every year for the hummers and they are so amusing to watch. They come along around the middle of April in my part of the world. Thanks for sharing, Ed.

Love and blessings,
Linda

As I wrote in Deborah's poem, the brief stay of migrating robins left my backyard about 1985. I believe it's because the soil here is not conducive to angle worms that the robins need for their journey north.

I do, herald the arrival of purple martins every year on a certain day in May. They combine and examine my martin birdhouse and pronounce it unsafe, or at least, unlivable, and move on. Last year, in the 30+ years that this birdhouse has been sitting on its high overlooking my backyard, some sparrows made a nest in it. That was the first time any bird took a liking to it.

In addition to your poem being a delightful read, it caused me to reminisce in a most wonderful way. I have been a retired teacher for seventeen years now. In my earlier years of teaching, when classrooms still had the old black chalkboards, one of my colleagues would draw this most beautiful picture on her blackboard (in colored chalk), displaying the return of Robins in the spring. I always looked forward to seeing her create that scene every year. It was one of those those simple pleasures of life.

Reminders of natures simple rewards are in short supply today, what with the complications of staying in the fast lane of success, avoiding the sideswiping of those looking to eliminate the kind of success that might allow some leisure time to appreciate a robin or two. Thanks for posting.

For some reason, we had a lot of robins that stayed around all winter. I can't remember that ever happening before. I don't know if it was due to the very mild winter that we had, or if there is another reason why they chose to stay.
A beautiful write.
