Poem Artwork

“Our soul mate is the one

Who makes life come to life.”

                                        Richard Bach

They say that most writers write about

Things they truly care about the best

Because these things truly inspire them

And fill their hearts and souls with zest

I know for me this is definitely the case

Animals nature and history are my passions

I would never even consider writing about

Politics romance or the latest uptown fashions

I wrote my very first book

About the many animals in my life

I also found an animal loving soul mate

Who would soon become my wife

I introduced her to my beloved northwoods

The setting for my latest fictional book

She absolutely loves it up there now

On this land’s enchantment she is hooked

And since she hailed from America’s southwest

She introduced me to her enchanting New Mexico

And since I now love her ancient homeland as well

My Western was inspired by her ancestor Geronimo

But there is another place on earth I truly love

It’s our planet’s very last great wilderness

I’ve adored my treks in its utter vastness

And it truly fills my writer’s soul with bliss

I’ve started penning my next book

Its setting is the majestic state of Alaska

Suddenly my soul mate seems quite concerned

And she would rather I write about Nebraska

She knows I do lots of book homework

And I love to take a book field trip or two

And the setting for my latest work

Seems to have turned her mood ice-blue

The last time I dragged her up to Alaska

She found grizzly-ravaged moose innards behind a tree

After I had positively and lovingly assured her

That it was a very safe and convenient place to pee

I will never forget the expression on her face

That most blustery and eye-opening day

And I fear that for the rest of my natural life

For her terrifying ordeal I will pay

“Why can’t you write a book about a place

That isn’t so wild and frightening and cold?

Why can’t your next book be about Tahiti,

It’s absolutely gorgeous there I’m told!”

I’ve also learned to humor my lovely soul mate

So I yelled out, “Sure Sweetie, Tahiti it will be!”

She excitedly raced off to find her suntan lotion

Her heart once again filled with joy and harmony

But when she happily returned she somehow knew

I had been rummaging through my closet drawer

When she spotted the thermal undies in my hand

She threw the suntan lotion at me – as I roared

I guess to keep my lovely soul mate happy

I’ll just have to write a book about Tahiti some time

Or she may soon pen her own chilling memoir

A crafty wife - a murdered husband – a most devilish crime

I also guess even soul mates’ passions and desires

Will never always completely bond and jell

One soul mate’s Heaven on Earth

Can truly be the other soul mate’s Hell

It's wonderful to know how well the two of you work together, but I'm with Rebecca. Enjoyed this poem, Ed. I wish you the best with your next book - and with Rebecca! (LOL at Franz)

Yes, I can see what you mean- I'd be having a rough time in Tahiti with my sun allergy, but so long as there are things to do besides going to a beach, I'd be game. This is a great poem because I think sometimes people think if they are soulmates they need to agree 100% of the time which is just plain silly. This poem is also one of your best skill wise, the flow is great. P.S. Thanks for your comments on my kitty poem. That part about finding your kitty on your dog's grave was really touching:)

Sounds interesting, Ed. Don't freeze onto the rocks. Well, difficult choice - I wouldn't mind roaming Alaska for a while, but my choice would probably be Tahiti - the salad dressing tastes better there. Franz

You were blest with the perfect soul mate long may your bliss endure. Good luck with your new book on the wilds of Alaska. Hilton was one of my favorite authors.

I don't recommend writing about Nebraska--I used to live there. Kinda boring, except of course for that field of prairie dogs across from my house. Don't know why it wasn't a great big cornfield. Illinois and Nebraska have a lot of corn in common (and cold weather).

Ain't it the truth....your writes come alive from first-hand experience. Your love of nature is something others' can learn from and your wife....well, I suspect she's a heart much like yours...but in a teasing way. Your poem says it all. Let her read it too!
I enjoy the way you make marriage easier for the way you create an "argumant". Who could ever refuse such a talented gypsy?

Success on your next book, Eddie, as you have found in
your marriage. This is wonderful, that Rebecca, despite
being a sun lover, travels Wisconsin with you.
This morning, on a sunny August day in the N.E. part of
the state, plants nearly froze.
I'm on Rebecca's side!
