Poem Artwork

“You can’t wait for inspiration.

You have to go after it with a club.”

                                Jack London

If your inspiration is ever on the wane

And you need a place to rekindle the spark

May I suggest a night walk in the desert

You’ll see all sorts of eerie things in the dark

The Bizarre and Eerie Legends of the Southwest

Are as vast as it’s never ending golden sands

If you want to meet a ghost or a dead outlaw

Take a night stroll in this most haunted of lands

But you will need a very steady heart

And you must be very quick on your feet

Because on some eerie moonless nights

You never know who or what you might meet

Frightening faces will emerge from the sandstone

Gigantic bats will flutter directly over your head

And if you’re an extremely lucky sort of bloke

You might encounter one of the walking dead

You might bump into a restless Apache warrior

Or a dead prospector still searching for his gold

Or a wild runaway spirit stallion

Galloping through the desert so bold

There’s a story about an old wagon train

With bony human skeletons riding inside

They say they’re still searching for California

Since no one has told them that they’ve died

There are tales of evil witches

Brujas as they are often known

Who delight in their ancient wickedness

As they turn your body to stone

Some people have spotted Sasquatch

Some have seen evil Riders in the Sky

I saw the ghost of Geronimo once

And this is not a lie

There are constantly new reports

Of mysterious hovering UFOs

I was invited aboard one

But that was long ago

I’ve even heard of an ancient legend

About a dark canyon with a dinosaur

I surely would love to meet it

Since I’ve never met one of those before

I stumbled upon some wild javelena pigs

And they scared me half to death

But my exhilaration was beyond measure

As I rushed off through the sand out of breath

If your inspiration is ever on the wane

And you need a place to rekindle the spark

May I suggest a night walk in the desert

You’ll see all sorts of eerie things in the dark

Ed, this is an exceptionally well-crafted piece as usual my friend. Whenever we use to go to “White Sands Missile Range” I always had an eerie feeling out in the desert and saw some really strange events, which I contributed to the U.S. Governments Missile Weapons Systems Program. However, I was very young and could never say anything for they would have thrown me into the loony bin or worse, the stockade …lol. Now, I do know better but, I still prefer to keep these events under wrap. They can still come and haul my behind away …lol. Excellent work, Poet. Thanks for sharing it.

Been there, done that! (which is, of course a bold-faced lie.. Ahem) I like that you admit that even YOU can get scared... and one other thing, Little Eddie, did the space ship ever bring you back? (wink)

Some of us deliberately wander where we know we'll get scared... it's fun! Here I am, being silly, when I really wish to tell you how much I loved the pure poetry of this. Your subject matter always super-glues me to the page, but I love the way you tell stuff. Yep. katy xox.

No thanks, Eddie. I get plenty of "eerie inspiration" just walking
the grounds of my humble residence. Like the black bear that weighs
about 400+ pounds...trying to open my back door!

I love the Jack London quote. His "How To Build A Fire" is one of
my favorite stories. Your poem was good, too!!!

I spent a week in Santa Fe last December. Whenever I feel my inspiration running low, I go back there in my mind. It's become a special place to me. I know just how you feel.
